Red Alert: Ducati 1098R vs RR

Ducati 1098R vs Desmosedici RR. yes, yes, YES !

They are two wild Italians, dripping gorgeousness. They taunt you their ‘you can look but you touch’ attitudes. And for most getting to ride either of will remain a wet dream, a always-unfulfilled fantasy…

Yes indeed, talking about the US$34,000 1098R and the US$72,000 Desmosedici RR. The is a 172bhp (at the rear wheel!), motorcycle for the street, while the RR is a street-legal 200bhp MotoGP For people with deep pockets, these two bikes the hot ticket to fulfilling ‘I am Troy and/or ‘I am Loris Capirossi’

Here at Faster and Faster. admit we absolutely love these bikes. We’ll never be able to buy either but that doesn’t stop us dreaming about the 1098R and the RR. And, of course, there are who actually own at least one of these and who’ve ridden both. to back. On a race track.

We found one such person on the Superbikes forum. He goes by the ‘Dames,’ owns a Desmosedici RR and written about his experiences, his RR with a 1098R (which, it he also owns, though isn’t very clear. ). are some excerpts from he says about the two bikes:

for the Desmosedici RR, $34,000 for the 1098R. The is priceless.

Power delivery

The was powerful, like I had imagined it be. It took me a while to learn to on before really pinning it. The was much smoother, however.

And I was able to achieve higher on the straights with the Desmo – 190km/h with the R and 200km/h the RR.

For me, the power delivery duration on the was smoother and longer, while the was more brutal and hit the rev-limiter quicker. I believe the Desmo was at around 13-14,000rpm and the 1098R at 10,000 revs.

The Desmo felt taller the R and its suspension felt harder out of the However, I would say that the between the two bikes is minimal and not an issue.

Both felt extremely nimble, easy to throw these turns. very un-Ducati-esque. a full tank of gas, the R was a harder than when it was but the Desmo was a lot harder to turn a full tank. We weighed bikes with full tanks and at 193kg the Desmo out to be about 10 kilos heavier the R – a bit surprising.

Best lap time

This one is to rate, coming from me. I an expert racer would the R on the Desmo. However, perhaps a of fear of how long Desmo would take to arrive and how they would cost me a little heavier handed on the R.

On I was about 2-3 seconds a lap slower on the Also, the gearing difference was not I was used to. I came from a 998 a 1036 big bore kit, so the R was of the same.

The Desmo belongs to a different – I have to learn to ride it.

I the Desmo has a slipper clutch but not the smoothest to tell you the truth. The R’s clutch was more familiar to me and two gears on it was just fine. On the when I dropped two gears it horrible sounds – like a inside the gearbox – not good.

Ducati Desmosedici RR

Ha ha. this has nothing to do with but the Desmo is sooo much than the R. You know exactly you’ve f***ed up and by how much, on the I loved the sound, even on laps. It was just so much fun to be to make that sound my wrist!

I may not be fast, but I know and I know how to be slow. Disappointingly, these bikes have brakes. Not awesome, not super, not but good to very good

The radial master cylinder on bikes is the same (slightly colours) and neither has the top-of-the-line master cylinder offered by

Monobloc, machined, whatever, the brakes on these bikes are rated ‘good’ in my book.

They both rock. i don’t know how to ride the properly yet, I’m sure in it will be like a different at speed compared to the R. I can tell not tapping either bike’s I feel like I have about 30% of their capacities including the brakes).

Again, if you can or even if you can’t, get

Here’s an MCN shootout between the and the Desmo RR

And if you aren’t seeing red here’s some more awesomeness.
