How To: Belt Change

My wife’s Monster 620 was approaching its 12,000 service (bought in 2004) and I to change the belts. I wasn’t to take it to my local dealer so I it myself. I had already adjusted the on it last year.

Two internet were really helpful to me: Packet’s How To and as always, Ducati I had ridden with Alex Packet) before and his description and made the job exceedingly easy. I thought it was going to be a lot tougher, but the job less than 2 hours start to finish.

I thought I’d post up some and description here too, to supplement the other sites. In research on the procedure I didn’t see too how-to on the Monster Board.

You’ll Need . 6mm and 5mm allen or allen wrenches, some compound (for the re-installing the plugs) and two Ducati cam belts $100 at my local dealer).

thing you need to do is put the bike up on a prop the gas tank (make there’s not much gas in there), and the spark plugs.

This is what you’ll be at. The Monster has two belt covers.

Use your 5mm socket or wrench to remove belt covers. It’s easy as you don’t need to anything out of the way.

I think the vertical cover to be removed first as they but I did it backwards and it was fine. Here’s you’ll be looking at with the removed.

While I had the covers off I inspected the and did a quick check of their Everything was fine. The tension is up putting a 5mm allen wrench the belt and the idler pulley.

It fit like a feeler gauge. has a full description of the procedure

before you tear into it got to get the timing all lined up. Put the bike in its gear. You’ll need to the engine around to get the cylinders at Top Center. (This is the same you use for checking valves.) Turn the wheel in a forward motion the tick mark on the flywheel up with the mark visible the glass:

If done it correctly each of the marks on the gears should up to their corresponding spots on the block. When I first it they didn’t line up. The was not at TDC.

I simply rotated the around again until all the lined up.
