Ducati Supersport 800

My 800 Supersport power mods.

I posted this on the .ms board, so bale out now if you’ve already read it.

I removed the emissions ‘crap’ (what seems like 2lbs of hose and canisters) with a TPOparts kit, opened my air box and switched to a KN, put on Leo Vince cans, and installed a DynoJet Power Commander tuned with a custom map.

Much THANKS goes out to Frank over at Powerhouse Motorcycles, West Babylon, NY. http://www.powerhousemc.com

I thought Frank was primarily a Powerbusa guy, but over the past year I’ve come to find that he’s got years of working on bikes in general and actually used to be a Ducati mechanic. Anyway, he knows what he’s doing and he’s good at what he does. Also, he’s extremely fair and competitive with his pricing and heck, I guess I’d have to say, he’s even kind of a nice guy. (okay, Frank, there it is. Now, pay up!)

Ducati claims peak numbers at 77hp @ 8250 rpm and 54 ft-lb @ 6500 rpm. Pale in comparison to any Hayabusa, but if I was looking to do THAT kind of riding, I would not have bought THIS bike! Plus, I have no idea where or how Ducati comes up with those numbers. I had no idea where my bike would figure next to Ducati’s numbers, either. My goal was to optimize MY bike.

I wanted to get my bike to do what it could do and then enjoy it for what it is. And it is a street bike with no intent to head for a track in the foreseeable future.

So, without rambling on too much more, here are the numbers:

(Stock) SAE hp = 71.5 and torque = 50.8 / actual hp = 75.6 and torque = 53.8

(Mapped) SAE hp = 77.4 and torque = 56.3 / actual hp = 81.5 and torque 59.3

Rough estimate return hp = 8.25 % and torque = 11 % increase.

Other things I’ve learned from this are:

P eak RPM is 8250. Where I used to shift at +/-7250 because it just felt right, now I know I can still go further, and how far

There is deffinately a rev-limiter at 9100. I wasn’t sure before but now I am.

However, peak torque is really at 5900 and not 6500. At least, this is what my bike is.

I love the sound of the pipes and open breather. As we all already know, there’s nothing like that low, throaty, rumbling Ducati L-twin sound.

And now for the, as Frank likes to call it, the AssDyno results. As soon as I rode off, I NOTICED THE DIFFERENCE! The bike felt smoother and even some of that low-rev, under 3k RPM, lugging went away. (I’m running with the original sprockets still.) The bike actually FEELS more powerful and again, smooth. I love the added torque, especially in the lower gears, but couple with the additional power with the ‘new’ sound, I’M HAPPY. It feels like a different bike.

I like it! My ass likes it a lot. (Speaking of asses, I ordered a custom seat from Sargent.)

I’ve only put about 30 miles on it because it’s been pretty cold out still. That and the ride home was followed by my wife and 4-yr old son who drove me to Powerhouse to pick the bike up. But after it warms up a little I’ll push it alittle more and report again.

Thanks Frank! The whole thing is a relatively inexpensive mod and I highly recommend custom mapping if you’re running with a power commander (they’re worth it). Give him a call if you’re in the tri-state area.

Tell him RJCduc sent you.
