2005 Ducati Monster S4R – Wicked

Submitted by Neil on Tuesday, 8 February 2005

After a short bit of town and riding from John BMW Ducati, it’s pulling out of US where Ducati’s Monster S4R it’s true nature.  A too much gas may have been and the exuberant monster kicked up heels…  well, actually front end.

It must been the nerves; going a border on a demo bike, on plates, making the outrageous of being a motorcycle journalist – all had left me twitchy and my throttle not as smooth as it should be.  But the front end is up, it may as well stay for a bit – in the name of testing mind Besides the look on faces of Giovanni and John Valk was the feeling of sniper’s rifles target on my back at this action.

This then is the S4R and it’s here to corrupt

Fifteen minutes later, joy is gone as I’m whump-whumping across the slabs of the I-5, Portland to attend the first Ducati West event.  It took at another 15 minutes before I to the less than startling that the I-5 is not the Monster S4R’s (or any … bike’s) stomping the windblast at freeway speeds, the stylish fly screen, is tremendous.

The I-5 exactly require the utmost especially on police laden and one’s mind can wander a The name “monster” brought a conversation I had a few years back Clive Barker about the of monsters.  Over the course of our shop”, it came up that is part of a good monster’s

Take the engine, Ducati did – right out of it’s 996 In that move Ducati it clear that it was not out to create a modern Frankenstein.  No, the Monster S4R is to the perfection good old Victor was for back in the day; the 996cc L-Twin packs a fiendish and around 68 ft-lbs of torque.

In terms that’s “gobs of as our USA entry wheelie suggests.  power corrupt?  Hell but even the corrupted have to things in, and that calls for even Mr.

Hyde had his Dr. Jekyll and average megalomaniac is always on about total control.

slick throttle control is by the Monster S4R’s Marelli system.  The throttle itself a bit heavy to the turn, but you quickly At 3,500 RPM you feel the engine forward, and that wave of will carry you though to red at with a seductive L-Twin At that point the rev limiter you a kick indicating, “shift Below 4,500 RPM the fly screen the mirrors blur, and the bars and vibe.

The solution?  Twist the throttle of – that vibe is the sign of a all pent up.

Maybe just the kit and re-place it with an emergency card, a solution that’s as useful and more weight-saving.  So our run of twisties didn’t have the quite set properly, the upside is soft, the bike still well and stuck to the road question.

Flicking through the requires a bit of work, the Ducati’s dry being a bit on the heavy side.  The lever requires a firm and while the feel might not be as as some offerings on the market, you adapt it’s more capable of quick and accurate The only things that gel are the clutch’s “groaning” when hot and it feathered at low speeds – such lot conditions are not the S4R’s element.

This became readily during Seattle rush-hour, it seems don’t stand on or complacency.  The bikes impeccable let it slip though the crawling without slipping the clutch.

Torque-ing off the drivers as the S4R and I romp by though the masses; monsters are, all, about the more unacceptable actions.  Some cans would add to that making the Monster S4R truly at those who get to close – this begs for a Termignoni implant.

The days see us doing press for Ducati North West at Portland International Raceway.  It gave us the opportunity to get the suspension sorted courtesy of GP Suspension. adjustable, the Showa forks dialed-in for preload, compression, and out back the ride height and were set.  That about a major change in the personality.

On the ride down to the S4R was just moderately evil – now it was good.

Then we did something we normally get to do with a tester – we put it on a

The green flag waves and to the S4R that must be like red to a – the monster is unleashed.  In tighter the forward leaning ergos of the S4R you great leverage against the bars, and the monster flows quicksilver through the bend.  after our warm-up laps, the and I latch onto an Aprilia R. On the straights the S4R kisses 240kph me hugging the tank, and the Aprilia is away.

If I had any sense I wouldn’t be this, but I don’t – the raw intoxication of the S4R has torn my common sense to

While the Aprilia has our advantage in the come the corners the Monster’s suspension and effortless handling me in a world of insane grins, of mad laughter, washes of adrenaline, and off the Aprilia’s rear tire.  We hard into PIR’s a tactic easily mastered by 320 mm disks mated to four-pot calipers, it’s a fiercely combination.  The only let down is a vague initial feedback.

Out the twin-piston caliper clamping a disc does its duties fuss.

With the rubber on the tires and the throttle opened any sense of reason, the corruption is the Monster S4R is in its own here.  Later I put the 999 to the same task around the To my surprise, while the 999 is only alive on the track, the Monster S4R is the that I’m more drawn to for the indecent fun of it all.

It’s rawer, less focused, and overall just to cane till it roars.
