Ride Review: 2010 Multistrada 1200 S Touring – — Rubber Rides Duc

09/27/2010 @ 2:49 pm, by Tim Hoefer 9

Dubbed the Best Motorcycle of the EICMA show, the 2010 Multistrada 1200 S Touring has a title that we’ve itching to test since we saw the debut in Milan last While the new Multistrada 1200 in many flavors, we somehow to get our hands on the Multistrada 1200 S version, or as we like to call it: Duc”. The Multistrada line has Ducati’s attempt to be more a sportbike-driven brand, and with latest incarnation we can see that the company has taken a serious at making a go-anywhere GS-…, Italian style of course.

We anxious to bring the Multistrada to our happy hunting grounds in Barbara, CA where we had just test ridden the groundbreaking VFR1200F a month back. Our with the new Multi actually with a very long and two-hour drive into CA on four wheels.

Traveling on wheels in Los Angeles is the stuff notes are made of, and naturally the trip from Brea was a pleasurable experience for a certain rider, than it was for one editor in LA gridlock. Of course that stop me from having the experience of becoming acquainted the Multistrada 1200 in its natural the open road.

Knowing the nature of Ducati motorcycles the seemingly inverse relationship sportiness and comfort), we were of how enjoyable the 150-mile ride from Brea would be on the Multistrada 1200 S Touring. through the almost endless of parked cars on the highway laid between Los Angeles and Barbara, I pulled over and the first text message about the bike, “So much ” it read, along with a of the Multistrada sitting on the side of road.

Editor’s note: is first time I’ve seen Timmy use an exclamation let alone four of them. Central California and the Grapevine to near 100F weather, I to myself “dear God, having a heat ….”  arriving to where he had pulled-over, I Tim not only alive, but beaming “This bike is way more fun the VFR.”

Arriving in Santa Barbara, we got to spend some time King Duc, taking in the aesthetic of this bird-beaked (or is it an anteater’s snout?), without any personnel around. Regardless of choice in animal analogies, the of the Multistrada 1200, while at first. grows on you over (GS owners know what we and by the time we had to give the bike to Ducati, the Multistrada 1200 remarks like “distinguishably looking” from our otherwise group of motorcycling compatriots.

are gripes about the bike do not go away over with though. Certain things the Multistrada 1200 S Touring’s that we never could to grips with, namely how tall this motorcycle At 33.5” seat height, we don’t know for whom motorcycle was built for.

I at 6’4” and Jensen is 6’2”, yet one of us could flat-foot the bike at a and getting on and off the bike proved to be a exercise in its own right for both of us. The hurdle seems to be getting leg over and around the saddlebags scratching them, a move we at time and time again…we may or may not laid a few boot scuffs the four days and 500+ we had the Multistrada 1200 S Touring Eventually we even began to the saddlebags, until of course we had to camera equipment and lunch with us.

The swingarm is distinctly as is the bike’s overall fit and finish. you get past the carbon fiber job, the Multistrada 1200’s are quite flowing, except for one the seat. When it comes to …, Ducati has taken the over form approach, and we them for that kindness.

The seat on King Duc overhangs the seat by nearly an inch, catches the eye and looks like an from the Ducati design But when you sit your … on the Multistrada, your … is like a yearly physical Hitting your lower the passenger seat aids in process, and provides a fair of lumbar support. In the debate sport vs. comfort, the Multi be the gold standard where the two

Providing a solid and comfortable platform, we found the Multistrada S Touring to be an easy and confident that you easily burn a miles on in a day if you were so inclined… as as you didn’t attempt to dismount the quickly and without stretching.

before we picked up King our interest was piqued to see and feel the integrated and electronically controlled suspension along with its matching ECU re-mapping. The Multistrada S Touring features four modes of user-selectable drive Urban, Enduro, Touring, and Switching between modes was accomplished while riding the with a couple of button and cutting the throttle while at

Since Ducati thought you like to take a friend and along for the adventure, you could setup the Multistrada 1200 to for a passenger’s weight and full

While only one of us attempted to the Enduro mode, getting in a dry creek bed in the process, we both the other three modes useful (Editor’s note: big to the Los Padres National Park for asking if we needed help, and to for taking off when they by during my off-road ‘excursion’). off the Ducati Superbike 1198 plant, the Multistrada 1200 is than capable of whipping neck back at full-throttle, but the displacement v-twin can be frustrating at speeds in the city, which is the Urban mode comes in to

While in Urban mode, the 1200’s Testastretta 11° motor from an unwieldy 150hp, to a manageable 100hp, which is suited for the city streets. traction control (DTC) also heightens its alertness, but we have the guts to check feature out in the wild, let alone to out the $20,000 check if we were like another publication did.

In the real world, Urban gives you much more power from stop to and the Multistrada 1200 S allowed us gear changes and lower without lurching around the and crowned streets of Santa Matched with a softer the coastal city’s traffic was enjoyable, until we found a of open road, and dropped the 1200 S Touring back Sport mode.

We’re guys at heart, and expect a from Ducati to act accordingly…even they have panniers to them. If you feel the same then Sport mode make you grin. Showing Duc in all her glory, Sport mode the suspension and lets the 1198cc do its thing unimpeded (we’re you can stiffen the bike further if Sport mode isn’t enough for you).

At the first to crack the bike wide-open, we astonished by how much power the 1200 has to give, and kind of for the seat that hugs coccyx like no tomorrow. It not win the next track day, but the 1200 S Touring was no slouch on our roll-ons. With its grippy and up-right sitting position, be hindered getting off the seat to further long before the torque-laden motor holds you in the corners.

You will not be dragging any but if you’re the last one around the on your Sunday morning you’ll only have to blame.

What the Ducati 1200 S Touring is really to do is travel some serious miles, regardless of road To this end, Bologna has the Touring mode function. A between Sport and Urban, on the freeway in Touring mode has a lax suspension feel, while more engine power on

Touring mode also less fuel out of the Multistrada 5.3 gallon tank than mode, which helps the miles quicker with pit stops. Ultimately what you’ll use will depend on mood and environment, which is of the point Ducati had in mind they designed the system.

Other technologies on the Ducati 1200 include the brightly lit LCD This LCD panel is bright, and you get a lay of the land the layout is fairly Unlike the usually sparse displays, the Multistrada 1200’s a fair amount of information can be toggled through while you

The special “HUD” can show information and settings, but why it has to be sequestered from the rest of the dash is us.

Ducati Multistrada 1200 S Touring

The Ducati Multistrada 1200 with a keyless ignition, and an key fob.  If you don’t pay close to the Ducati dealer when he you on this feature, or if Ducati to give you a user manual they hand you the keys to a Ducati Multistrada 1200 S , the process of actually turning on the can be quite confusing. The key here, and yes pun is intended, is to have the keyless key fob on person, this much is of obvious.

And then in what can be described as the NES Contra Code you curse and hope while in the magic code that bring King Duc to life. Up, up, down, left, right, right B, A, select, start, and with several dozen of the kill switch, and presto the 1200 comes to life order to turn the motorcycle Once you realize that you to press the kill switch the off position, everything becomes a lot and you feel like a moron…just as we

Either the air was thinning 33.5 off the ground, or the superiority complex of on such a tall bike has to our heads, but suffice it to say that you’ve made it actually the bike, your perch is high. This of course the Multistrada 1200’s suitable clearance, but also lets the stretch his or her legs out (although see our about the centerstand further in the article), which avoids leg

Arm positioning is upright, but neutral. Ducati had long rides in The only thing that hold us back from a ride would be the wind

Despite arming the Multistrada with an adjustable windshield, we find little difference in the shield up and down its five or so of travel. Seemingly funneling right into our helmets, hard to imagine how this got past RD with a stamp of yet it did. Riders of different will vary on their but for our six-foot plus frames, look at aftermarket options if neck begins to tire.

An that’s specific to only the 1200 S Touring, and not the other is the centerstand arrangement. Continuing a started with the Ducati Ducati seems intent on things in the way of your natural position. Thus as a bonus that comes on King Duc is the centerstand, whose main is constantly hitting your shoe.

While riding Duc on the balls of your feet and footed, the stand’s push bar in clear contact with heal. Annoying at first, you realize this could as a quick ejection method if not careful. The heat grips on the hand were quite and could probably boil an egg if on their highest setting.

Our gripe has to be the saddlebags, and how much these little bastards in simply getting on and off Mt. Multistrada. a high school girl’s bra these devices seemed specifically to ruin our pre-pubescent and still remain a quagmire in our lives.

While you will hoist yourself up onto Duc, we hope you never through a rainstorm or charity car wash. With noticeable between the two-halves, we were for Santa Barbara’s perpetual and that everything we stowed was in a waterproof bag. While (they really tie the room together) and stylish, we found the only thing that us more than swinging our over the bags, were to close the damn things.

Again like the ignition, figure it out over time if on your own, but there has to be a way…it’s not like you’re a watertight seal after

Negatives aside this is a solid ride no doubt. the get-go we had a bromance with its and Pikes Peak winning The Multistrada 1200 truly has an air it that pushes it past the of its predecessors. Even though we dragged a knee or did a back we felt that this was the best of all endeavors combined, not being the best at any.

If the 1200 S Touring was still in our garage come Sunday we’d have no excuse but to and I personally would hate it for This is a genuinely enjoyable to ride, and even if you’ve ridden a couple hundred on it, you want to get right back on and do it all again.

Familiar with the mantra that if the waves are so are we, surely we would be fired our jobs for never showing up. Our employment spared another we reluctantly returned King Duc to Ducati, leaving the Multistrada S Touring for the next lucky Ticking off his maintenance list for one dirty motorcycle, the Ducati mechanic exchanged one last with us before we left, “I see you down some fire Yeah, something like
