The 2013 Ducati is all new; smaller, lighter and powerful than the air-cooled it replaces. This SP version fancy Ohlins shock and forks for even better

What’s New

Tons! Ducati the previous 1078cc and 803cc, air engines for an all-new 821cc, cooled V-Twin engine. I was on the SP which meant getting to between the same riding shared with the Panigale. 110 HP, high throttle response, and 1 ABS on the front wheel only and control off.

The SP, over the regular Hypermotard, gets Pirelli Diablo “SP” tires and Panigale three spoke Marchesini wheels. The SP’s cam covers are the mudguard and cam-belt covers are fiber. It has a seat height of 35 compared to the regular Hyper comes in at 34.2.

Four of camping in Big Sur for Memorial Day with 20 of my friends. We’d planned it ago, just days discovering an amazing camp that was often passed by people, and we’d even the girlfriends to agree to drive up and to bring most of the gear them so we could ride and enjoy the road.

As the trip got I started to look at what we’d have around I got an email saying that had a Hypermotard SP that would be I never get this lucky. trip and dream bike, but it live up to my expectations?

I picked it up in the of the week before the trip and the following few days commuting to and LA on it, as well as a fair amount of town riding.

In town? Fantastic. After a amount of urban riding, I was the riding position and bike had been designed with splitting in mind. The mirrors, have been moved to on top of the offer a surprising amount of estate despite their size, and their new location reduces handlebar width.

The ate up potholes and rain grooves, but provided plenty of firmness someone cut me off and I had to grab a handlful of brake. Then there’s the After recently riding the Dorsoduro 1200. the Hypermotard a little underpowered (as well as tiny in general) and it took me an to get used to the engine profile. A day I was in love with the new 821cc, motor.

Plenty of power to get up and to get through an opening in traffic, torque to keep a … grin on my face while managing to return 52mpg. came Big Sur.

Highway 1, Big Sur, is often cited as one of the roads in the world. Normally, it is too with dudes on Goldwings like me a few weeks ago) or in mini vans to really but I was determined to not blow this The campsite was first come, serve, so my two buddies and I stayed in San Obispo Thursday night and got an early start Friday so we could reserve a site for our large party.

The other guys were a Bonneville and GSX-R750 and we got on the road mid and kept a brisk, yet comfortable since one of the guys had crashed the time we went on a bike and I was still acclimating to the Hyper. We most of the weekend hiking, but got a few to ride throughout the weekend and it came time to head we were ready to have fun.

Now, I’m the James May of I have never been, and will never be, very I understand the concepts of what it to go fast and consider myself a competent motorcyclist and I love the of dragging my knee and having the to really hustle on a bike….until I get decently fast, which is I begin to re-evaluate if it’s worth it to push much and I think about how much I my knees intact.

After spending a day on a track, the of trying to really push it leaving room to react to in the turns, traffic coming the direction, and whatever is around next corner I can’t see just stresses me out.

I’m on the Hypermotard SP that is. It’s good. I’ve never on a bike where I had that control or that kind of to adapt that quickly to the The fueling is fantastic, the suspension perfect up into the triple and the brakes….oh how I love brakes.

It makes you better.

I had an appointment in Beach fairly early afternoon, so my buddy on the GSX-R750 and I got on the at 6:30am to a completely empty We let our tires warm for the first or two and then I rode better and than I’ve ever for the following 50 or so. Our camp site was in one of the sections of road but the bike ate each hairpin, instilling and more confidence as I took turn faster and faster.

By the time we hit the south side of Big I felt completely comfortable at double those I had previously on that same road by San Simeon, we were cruising in digits for miles on end.

much everything. They’ve a great bike and made it narrower, and more powerful. It beautifully, is unbelievable amounts of fun to and all while returning decent gas (I averaged 52mpg the days in and LA and 48 for my trip to Big Sur and back).

The engine is the ergonomics are spot on, and, the bike is simply gorgeous.

My issues with the Hypermotard SP when I used it in ways it intended. The seating position, and of any kind of wind protection, the freeway leg of our trip pretty above 70mph. The way up was particularly and I was getting blown around a bit, the weather was better the day we home and I wasn’t nearly as

My other issue was with the The slope of it made it nice for fast, but for around town or riding it pushed you forward and me to continually re-adjust. I found scooting my … all the way forward to sit in the area that was flat, but greatly decreased my leverage the motorcycle.

I would much a flat seat like on the or Dorsoduro 1200 as I’ve really found myself about sliding off the back and let’s face it, most of us or ride around town far than we are able to get out and play in the
