History of the Ducati Supermono

the Ducati Supermono was first at the 1992 Milan Show, it was an hit because of its good looks and balancing innovation.

It was first to compete in the Italian and European championships. Massimo Bordi was the engineer at Ducati who designed the double con-rod engine system  When Claudio (currently Head of Production and at Ducati) joined the company in his task was to design  the chassis.

The looks of the Supermono are down to African Pierre Terblanche. The was his first complete design for and is universally regarded as one of the most bikes ever produced.

Forty Supermonos were in 1993 with a 100 mm cylinder (549cc). A further 27 with a bore (572cc) were in 1995. The price in 1993 was

Now restored Supermonos are changing for upwards of £100,000. (surely the Ducati Supermono one of the most Ducatis to date).

What’s so about the 1993 Ducati

1. The engine bottom-end — the was from Ducati’s legendary Fabio Taglioni — an of the 1979 500cc Ducati engine architecture,  but closed off the rear cylinder would been.

2. The cylinder head the Desmoquattro ‘4 valve‘ DOHC head was designed and developed by Bordi in collaboration with Engineering UK. The valves are mechanically and closed unlike other where the vales are controlled by a The use of four valves was first on the 1988 production Ducati but for the Supermono was modified with a bore and larger engine spacings.

3. The engine balance — a single cylinder engine thinks it’s a twin. It has two but only one piston.  The spare is attached to an arm of similar length is pivoted within the crankcases at 45 degrees between where two would be on the 90 degree twin.

gives the engine near primary balance and so runs to rpm as smooth as silk.

4. C of G — the canted forward just 15 from the horizontal, 50mm (2 above a line drawn the axles, there’s next to no giving it the lowest centre of of any current motorcycle. Changing is just a thought process than a noticeable physical – the ultimate rider’s machine.

5. Power-to-weight ratio — it many a Supersport racing to shame, giving it also on par too. With one power every 720 degrees or 2 revolutions of the the delivery of power is not as aggressive on the tyre as a four. This the rider the opportunity to open the much earlier in a corner the confidence of really good

6. Riding position — there is no rear cylinder on the twin) it’s slimmer any other bike where the legs meet the fuel giving the rider an intimate position close to the bike, in it rather than on top of it.
