A Harley-Davidson Nightster Review a Sportster Owner

I’ve been a Sportster guy — I a 1993 XL Deluxe that had since 1994. So when the to test the 2007 Harley-Davidson XL Sportster 1200 Nightster my way, I jumped. The 2007 Nightster is the latest addition to the XL

Carrying a base price of ($10,675 as tested with paint and HD Factory Security the Nightster comes with a 24 mileage warranty, and estimated economy on premium unleaded gas of mpg city/57.1 mpg highway.

all this attention to detail, a shame that the exposed and tubing on the Nightster is so ugly and Tangles of wire and hose run the frame rails, looking and vulnerable. Yuck.

a big guy — I stand 6’2 and big-boned, as us fat guys say. But always found the Sportster and layout satisfactory for my size. all a matter of purpose and use.

tweaks the Sportster layout an even lower seat (just over 26 unladen vs. for the XL 1200R Roadster), and a flat, bar that stretches your more than the standard style that you’ll on most stock Sportsters. The pegs and controls are positioned to an upright riding position, the La-Z-Boy recliner position of the equipped XL 1200 C Custom.

The bars provide an unobstructed ahead. Instrumentation is minimal and — a single round housing is mounted to the center of the home to an analog dial and a digital odometer/trip meter, with a few warning lights and There’s no tach, no fuel no temperature gauge, no thermometer basically, there’s a whole lot of

Harley cleaned up the Sportster’s a few years ago, eliminating the fork lock holes, and them with a keyed lock that works the same key as the ignition. Now they need to take it that logical step, and integrate the lock with the fork

Nightster’s hand controls, bar and front brake reservoir are all as are the bar-mounted front turn and headlight cowl. Not only is pretty cool-looking, it has the side of reducing glare and reflection on the

Nightster’s 1200cc is rubber-mounted in the frame, an enormous over my old solid-mounted Sportster. The does wonders for the comfort of the and even makes the mirrors at many speeds. The air-cooled V-twin is rated to deliver 79 of torque @ 4000 rpm. doesn’t release horsepower — my local shop that their stock measured in the upper 60s on the dyno.

The technology is very familiar two push-rod activated overhead per cylinder with self-adjusting lifters; a five-speed transmission a wet clutch; a chain-driven primary and final drive. Nightster standard with electronic port fuel injection It’s amazing that the advances haven’t erased the of a motorcycle line that has around for fifty years.

low seat height was accomplished by the rear shocks and scooping out the I expected the shorter available to affect clearance, but I was pleasantly to discover that Nightster very nicely in the lean. the bike has pronounced feelers on its I never touched down, around the tightest turns. however, were another

can be a blast to ride. It accelerates stops smartly and behaves a Sportster. I have to admit I a bike that sits up a higher and feels a little, sportier.

In a dense urban Nightster feels a bit vulnerable. really low, hard to see at and in a world full of SUVs a recipe for disaster. Nightster is a for out-of-the-way roadhouses, not downtown

Every factory Harley the starting point on a journey of and even with its cool Nightster could do with tweaking. The stock slash-cut mufflers keep the noise maybe more than I I might go for a set of the Screaming Eagle slip-ons for a cooler exhaust just like every Sportster rider seems to done. Those front will work better progressive springs and heavier oil, and maybe an aftermarket

If your regular route freeways, you may want to invest in a felt like a kite at speeds. Oh, and then there are the stainless steel brake the gel grips, the bar-and-shield tire and the countless other items you can add the H-D catalog. Or, you can enjoy the elemental of Nightster’s design and execution, and it alone.

Nightster wouldn’t be my first in the Sportster lineup — pick the Custom as my starting But for low seat height, unique and a pure Sportster experience, delivers.
