Harley’s Cafe Racer Throwback Makes Waves in the Sportster Lineup

Still relatively new, the Harley Davidson XR 1200 X is intended in many ways to help Harley Davidson to branch out and further their foothold in Europe. Harley Davidson, already reeling from cutbacks in 2009 and 2010 which forced them to close up some operations in the United States in order to remain in the black, still manages to bring some winning motorcycle designs to market. The 2011 Harley Davidson Sportster XR 1200 X is no exception.

In its third year on American shores, and with distinctive flat-track racer styling, Harley enters a realm it really hasn’t seen, well, ever. Being largely interested in the cruiser market, in the United States, only occasionally have the Harley Davidson designers taken a hard look at the racing (outside of the drag circuit) and the production bikes inspired by these almost one-off bikes. The Sportster line of motorcycles is the perfect vantage point from which to relaunch Harley into the flat track racer trend.

Harley’s European Invasion

Immensely popular in Europe, the naked bikes that personify the flat-track racer trend have just not been particularly well received in the U.S. While there has been a following, many riders in the U.S. subscribe to either the cruiser or sportbike set, and generally don’t deviate much from that. While the Harley Davidson XR 1200 X will have what is likely to be a huge following in Europe, it won’t be quite as big over in the states, and so, don’t be surprised if you don’t see too many of them cruising around.

The 2011 Harley Davidson XR 1200 X – Specs

The Harley Davidson XR 1200 X features an engine that, for all intents and purposes, is pretty much identical to the engine utilized in other 1200cc Sportster models. As you would expect with a Harley, the Sportster XR 1200 X features great attention to detail, particularly in it’s engine compartment, with wiring hidden where it doesn’t need to be in plain sight, many blacked out engine components.

The XR 1200 X engine itself is the Evolution engine, a powerhouse that delivers great power in a compact package, Air cooling, and precision oil cooling, a technology new to Harley Davidson’s XR 1200 X in the 2009 and 2010 models which allows the Sportster to run a leaner fuel mixture, while keeping the bike from having to run a radiator. Leaner fuel mixtures, after all, increase heat dramatically in an engine. A five-speed transmission is standard.

While life may not always be in black and white, the 2011 Harley Davidson XR 1200 X is only available in black or white. The white bike has a very retro feel to it, while the black XR 1200 X has a sinister look that’s hard to turn away from. Coupled with the black satin finish on the remaining parts, the Sportster XR 1200 X might be a touch difficult to find on a dark night without a flashlight, but it does look cool, particularly if you’re going to hang number tags on it and go racing.

Overall, with the end of Buell’s production motorcycle days, the 2011 Harley Davidson XR 1200 X is as close as you’re going to get to a premium, American-built sport bike. For what it’s worth, though, if the Sportster XR 1200 X is the only game in town, it isn’t a bad game to get into.
