Harley-Davidson FLTRI Road

I was actually hoping for a Road when I asked Harley if I borrow a bike for our ride on the Ridge Parkway. However, as the approached, Harley asked if I take a Road Glide I agreed, though when ridden a Road Glide a few years before, it hadn’t me much one way or the other.

Although build on the same platform frame and engine) as othe Touring models, the Road is unique among Harleys, the one with a frame-mount fairing of the handlebar bat wing used in the Glide series. This style was introduced in 1980 on the Glide.

At least initially I didn’t the looks of the big fairing with its headlights, especially since the seemed to need an Electra trunk (or Tour-Pak, in Harleyspeak) to the statement that the fairing The trunk is available as an option, and the begs for it, in my eyes, since the big just suggests long on the open road.

However, a week and a bit over 2000 the Road Glide thoroughly my opinion. Other than differences in the wind protection the larger fairing and the welcome system, I didn’t expect to be a noticeable difference between it and the King I had been hoping to The frames are essentially the same and so is the layout— Harley’s hard rider floorboards, triple brakes, and so on.

However, the Road Glide me.

Despite the extra weight of its the Road Glide seems to more cornering clearance the Road King, giving it lean angles. It pitched just a bit on the suspension during cornering but never did anything The brakes were adequate, as always the handlebar levers are not handy for smaller hands.

riders find it uncomfortable to the big brake pedal in traffic, my size 13 boots don’t any trouble keeping the toe hovering the pedal.

The fairing provided good and weather protection in the areas it and its lack of lowers was actually in the warm weather that blew through my ride. the short windshield (yeah, you can get a one) didn’t completely the wind from my helmet, was no buffeting and it never interfered my view ahead, even in the or when I encountered those bug swarms.

The presence of a tachometer in the complete instrument array was too. So was the audio system into the fairing. The dual provided a bit more illumination out than the normal single of the same wattage.

The Road Glide uses usual hard saddlebags, their seemingly complex but quite simple and effective system. I heavily stuffed the but they kept their dry when the Great Deluge They are a bit narrow and won’t some larger items, and capacity is just modest by the of other brands hard

They are easily removed two quarter-turn fasteners each you want to clean the bike or the wheel.

The riding position my five-foot-ten frame quite and the handlebar bend was comfortable. The mounts for the 1450cc V-twin snuff vibration. In terms of my only possible complaint was the which seems softer the Road King’s and bottoms out too on all-day rides.

However I’d replace bike’s seat if I bought one of two Harleys.

The Road Glide turned in better fuel than Road Kings I ridden (and any other bike in memory), perhaps due to aerodynamics provided by the fairing. tank turned in over 50 mpg I never did much riding in providing more than 200 on a fill-up of the 5.0-gallon tank. 1450cc big twin does turn in great mileage.

It makes good power, only middling displacement and two pushrod-operated valves per cylinder.

Otherwise, the bike was about I expected: smooth, pleasantly easy to manage, and a comfortable It did not give me any surprises or things to about. In fact, I may have a new Harley traveling bike.
