Classic leather…

…just in for Christmas.

I don’t know you but each year there is someone on my Christmas gift that deserves a lump of in their Christmas Stocking, it’s one of my kids. I found lump of coal today on

Here’s the deal though, the I think deserves it (not one of my but I do think it would be hilarious to see my son in would really like it. So why is it a of coal? Because any sane would never be seen in wearing it! On the other hand, all you to do is go to the Sturgis Rally (or pick any of a such rally’s) and it becomes a socially acceptable piece of

This jacket really is a of classic American Motorcycling.

on the pictures below and if you hurry you just be able to get it under the tree.

It’s that of year that I start for, working on and writing ‘winter projects’. Here in California winter is all about to switch from shorts to pants and maybe a long t-shirt. OK…I said just to make all of you that in colder climates a bit jealous but the is, it does get cold here for us and though we may not have heated to build bikes in, my journalistic Peter Egan has the best, but we do to warm up the garage at night to on bikes.

It’s no secret I love the Harley Davidson it really is one of the few Harley’s that I do lust after…note here…Santa are you listening. The XLCR was not one of ‘The Company’s’ shining moments, at the but it has become quite a cult XLCR models in beautiful are selling for upwards of five their original selling

Honestly, Harley dealers selling them at ‘fire prices two years after quit making them. A less than 2000 of the CR were made and as I have before they went like a fart in church. too bad to because a number of the features went into XLCR up helping make the standard a much better motorcycle.

G. Davidson penned this from the ground up. He went the BMW R90S and the Ducati SS. The XLCR was the and fastest of the Sportsters. THe CR was 5hp up on the basic it was under 500LB’s (which the BMW was and had a top speed over somewhere a bit 110mph (which in itself was not that big a deal at that

Willie G. pulled some of the design straight off Harley’s own track dominating XR750. to the faithful, it was not a real Harley. there were the AMF quality with the bike but all told, the was a good bike.

Harley the Sportbike market again later with Buell but pulled the plug. Harley their market.

Back to projects, I found an XLCR on this morning, that if brave enough, will be a winter project. It’s rough, it’s not a basket but, it is rough. This is a that is going to need a lot of and elbow grease.

The seller is honest about what has and been done to/for the what parts he has, the of said parts and what he to keep off the bike for his collection and goes with it. Some of the is good, some is questionable but all in all if you a good winter project, is pretty good choice. The is a runner so that in itself you a good starting point.

this XLCR you have a have an easy choice to it all up (but leave it a little piece it back together and it. Or…go the full restoration and invest a whole lot of money, you will never get back if you to sell it, and it will be a really motorcycle for a collection. And with a work, it could end looking this one…

1976 Harley Sportster

1976 was a really time for ‘The Motor they had been bought up by AMF and control was pretty low on the priority balls and pool tables more important than I’m guessing that American and Foundry Company needed a tax off? Everybody has heard story many times so we beat a … horse

To be fair here though, think that it was AMF that saved Harley Davidson fading away as Indian Well, Indian didn’t it limped. AMF Harley’s did have problems but I think part of was that AMF was trying to modernize the process and as we all know, major don’t always come easy.

In my humble opinion, the motor has always been best. The BIG twins have the but the Sporty has Spunk! The Sportster was to compete with the British and it did an ‘admirable’ job. It didn’t the handling prowess of the brits but in a line…The Sportster was king.

loved drag racing and the fit perfectly.

I found a really nice ’76 on ebay that I think be great just as it is or build it It is stock condition, even has the gas tank sticker. It has been serviced by the dealer and is ready to the button and ride off into the the sunrise, whichever way you want to go. is a really nice Ironhead that will give you a lot of of smiles.

Just take care of it.

1976 Harley Davidson

One last parting comment the AMF years. As I said earlier, AMF was a alley company, here’s And thank goodness Willie G and a few bought the company back.

Harley Davidson Sportster

In Harley Davidson was not really in compared to Indian. A few years the Beatles arrived there was the ‘British Invasion’. Soldiers had home from the war in Europe and buying motorcycles.

Triumph, Norton, AJS, Enfield, and were all building light and motorcycles while Harley and were still building heavy and slower bikes. tried to compete with the by building bikes powered by the twin and, Harley to Italy looking for lightweights. of that worked for the American

Indian rode themselves the sunset while Harley decided to go head on with the with the technology and success already had. “let’s what we already know how to do make it lighter and faster and it a good name”. Enter the

The 1957 Sportster had the new Overhead Ironhead engine but was stuck an older KH model chassis and for all of Harley’s good intentions, it was not a motorcycle and had no chance of competing the motorbikes from across the When dealers first saw it were less than and convinced Walter Davidson to the KR race bike with the new engine, which he did, begrudgingly, and the Sportster is now the longest continuously made model in history.

The Sportster was considered first ‘Muscle Bike’. the years it was steadily changed, not improved, but changed. The 1958 had the smaller 2 gallon ‘Peanut’ bobbed fenders and straight

This is what buyers

In 1972 AMF was building Harley and honestly, quality went down the drain. That is not my opinion but one widely held by In 1973 Cycle magazine did a six comparison and the Sportster came out last. Still, the Sporty to sell.

It was even a TV star!

I am a fan of the Yeah, I know, it’s the ‘girls Harley’, or the ‘baby or the ‘wanna be a Harley’ but I believe the reason it stills sells is because it works. The Sportster has from 883cc to 1000cc to 883cc up to 1200cc’s and currently are about a half dozen of the Sporty at your local dealer.

In my humble opinion, the is Harley Davidson’s best and I think Harley thinks the way. Why? Because are still building it more fifty years later. said.

I found a really updated 1972 Sportster on today. This one has been set up to more like the XLR than the XLH it is. The has given the motor a good nice new Borriani wheels, new and pillion pad, tires and paint job. It is ready to home today.

This be a really fun bike to ride. It has the it should and the upgrades it needs.

Ah, the world of Davidson. Literally, the ‘world’ of Davidson. After years of big, heavy traveling and bikes, Harley’s market was bombarded by the lighter faster speedsters during the 50′s and To fight back, Harley us the Sportster.

A great bike but a slow heavy Harley by I love Sporty’s though…they work, always have…and start down the path of the Harley. The Brits just had the Company beat in that At the same time, Harley was trying to win over the lightweight with small bore two like the Hummer and its kin.

didn’t fare well in the

Next was the Japanese invasion, Harley just couldn’t get a now, could they. So the that be in Milwaukee decided to try in the lightweight market, but this they brought in the pros, the The European manufacturers had been and perfecting the small motorcycle for

In Harley Davidson’s mind…”Why the wheel?” So it was off to the continent the boys Milwaukee went.

In 1960 Davidson bought up a 50% interest in Motorcycles, in 1974 Harley had control at the Italian factory in then in 1978 sold it all to and retreated back to Wisconsin to what they knew bikes for the American open

Harley Davidson starting over the small bikes to a disinterested market but they working on it, especially when AMF over. There were the (the horizontal 4 … and the small 2 stokes from the 100 to the 500cc MX. None of these, maybe the little Baja, what was needed to combat the faster and cheaper models Honda and Yamaha.

AMF Harley Davidson put together a strong marketing campaign, some fast riders, but the lightweight line never got off the ground. The Sprint series was successful in the hands of riders Mert Lawill in AMA Flat racing, but the two strokes never caught on.

Today while my daily cruise through looking for something I want but I I don’t need, I came the orphaned child from AMF Davidson, a 2 … SX250. The SX is the model; there was also an SS which was street only.

are some specs on the SX; first, in there were only 469 (maybe because earlier didn’t sell??), it weighed a (?) 275lbs, put out an eye popping 20HP and get you a traffic ticket on the freeway for as fast as it could at 71.5mph (to it look better, use the European KPH!). In 1978 a new SX250 set you back just $1130.00, $200-300 more than its counterpart, but hey, it actually was a motorcycle and they always more.

But…this particular from Harley / Aermacchi did one thing that none of the ‘enduro’ models had and that was the rear wheel. I’m not kidding, rear wheel was worth the money alone, especially if you did strip it down and ride with it. The rear wheel was the ‘quick change’ type was used on European off road

It also came with a cam chain adjuster that you much more accurate alignment than anything the competitors had at the time. If you went out and all that, it would cost twice as much as the base price difference. However, it was slow.

It may seem that I am a little hard on Harley for models and truthfully I am, but Harley have learned the first around that lightweight is not what riders wanted Harley.

Now, with all said, I did find a neat SX250 for sale on ebay would be really fun to have. the last year, 1978 they slowed production to only 469 units. Now, may think it’s more because they didn’t many but the truth is they make many because bought ‘em. Don’t that fact with’limited etc, etc…

This SX is complete, I think, he didn’t a picture of the muffler side of the so who knows what condition it is in. If the is in good condition, everything looks pretty good, it like both side are missing and the mirrors are’t but that’s no big deal. The seller it ran when it was parked and I would that if it ran good back it wouldn’t take much to running nicely now.

The are missing on the tank but those are on the motorcycle restorers best the internet. There a few good for parts and info for this not a lot but it is there. If you feel like up at a Harley ride on this red headed stepchild of a Harley, bet you get as many people asking you it as the guy who spent $20,000 just on for his Fat Boy.

’78 Harley XLCR

It’s no secret, I a very strong lust for XLCR’s. It’s some of sickness. Why would anybody a slow, heavy motorcycle vibrates more than the five cent ‘vibro-bed’ in a motel, needs a lot of maintenance, oil everywhere…(this is where I insert the you tell someone your doesn’t leak, they you …because its out of oil. ), has brakes Fred Flintstone would are crappy, and Harley Davidson barely give away it came out.

Tell me why I these bikes, please me…do I need a twelve program. No, I just need an because it has soul.

In the 1970′s and the Eighties, there was the UJM, Japanese Motorcycle, whether it was Honda, Kawasaki or Suzuki…they all pretty much the same, jobs were different but the of the time were very…well, I call them the Kawayamazukida’s of the world. Sure you could buy a bike for something that Vanilla, but along with came a higher purchase a level of unreliability and a much dealer network if you did need

So, where does the Harley XLCR fit in? Compared to a UJM, it is a being…it vibrates, it snorts, temperamental, it will give you it will leave it’s on the garage floor every and it will put a smile on your every time you ride it and yours is the only one in a sea of look

The XLCR was expensive, you could buy a Ducati or Moto Guzzi, to I think the XLCR was trying to for less money and you would get a better motorcycle. That is why the XLCR didn’t sell. The Company wanted to expand its and Willie G decided that a Racer was going to help

Ok, he was a little off the mark, at the time, but XLCR’s command some serious $$$$. The XLCR has a strong cult following. So if it is the same old 4 speed 1000cc (a lump of a motor) with a suspension and lousy brakes, the was unique and it had the Harley soul.

I found a very nice model on ebay that is a really good value at time. It’s super it’s all original and…so under $10K. A clean can go for a lot more…if you want one, is the buy.

Click on the pics and see if a ‘little left of center’ of american motorcycling history is in future.

’62 Davidson Pacer

You know, Davidson is a lot more than big chrome behemoths rolling the road and the legendary history a lot more than just Fonda and Dennis Hopper the country with a gas tank of drug money or Evil jumping over the fountain at Palace in Las Vegas. The history is full of clean cut kids little two strokes to school.

the war (WW2), Harley was doing best to try and get returning soldiers Harley Davidson motorcycles and was no better way than to give lightweight, fun and inexpensive bikes. some brand loyalty and next bike will be one of the BIG Harley bought a simple two engine design from DKW in adapted it to their style of and started building baby

The baby Harley’s started out then to 165 cc then onto the 175 is what the Pacer is. When people think of the small they think of the Hummer, we have written about a few times…it’s an interesting story no, I’m not going to write about here, lucky you. the little Harley’s didn’t all that well across the in spite of all of Harley Davidson’s yet today, they are a much after little motorcycle.

In Harley upped the ‘Super 10′ was 165cc, to 175cc and gave it a new the Pacer. Side note the Pacer only lasted I three years. A couple of later AMC (American Motor known as Rambler) built a car the same name. It too was short

Note to car and motorcycle makers…if you a model to last, don’t it a Pacer. But, I digress…

the Pacer came out in 1962 it was a frame bike with on the seat. In 1963 they the rear end by including a rear system under the motor, they still use a version of to day…Harley certainly uses its don’t they. The Pacer incorporates the ‘Teleglide’ front a definite upgrade for the little

I found a really nice Pacer on ebay today has been sitting in this living room for the past few I am a follower of the ‘Ride Them, Hide Them’ religion so I this little baby baby Harley needs to a life cruising the campus. in great condition, looks a very fun little ride and have all that many on it.

Picture yourself showing up at the biker (Harley) hangout on little 175cc 2 … and parking it amongst all the Dyna Electra Glides, Fat Boys bikes, not the riders), Low Riders, and knowing that you belong In some more than of the others but that’s another

’62 Harley Hummer

It’s no secret to who knows me that I never the Harley Kool Aid. I a good number of friends are well ensconced in the Harley and yet,…can hustle a Dyna or a Sportster along a twisty leaving supposedly ‘sportier’ in their “potato, potato, wake.

For thirty years I have lusted after one HD model, the XLCR, it’s not all that great in any respect wise, but it has a cool factor I can’t resist. Since I writing about vintage and the people who ride them, I found there is another I would love to have. The Davidson ‘American Lightweight’

AKA the Harley Hummer. These bikes are so cool, I have to a way to get one someday. I just need a barn, and…permission from the

The little Harley two strokes at the time were not big sellers in Omaha Nebraska. A dealer in was selling the baby Harley’s than Omaha Steaks was meat to New York. Dean the dealer, for some reason the little bike under his and made a success of it at a time the rest of the Motor Company couldn’t give them

Now, this was no mean considering that Omaha was the of Cushman scooters. Here’s a bit of for you, are all the early two … called Hummer’s? The correct is…No.

Only the 1955-59 models are actually named in honor of that Omaha However, the name stuck and all early lightweights are still to as Hummer’s.

My daily search for old motorcycles brought me to this 1962 model, a ‘Pacer’ in the archives. To me, this is the perfect bike. It runs. Hey, more do you want. Really.

Well, if you’re looking to a very cold and bleak on the edge of the prairie in western hunkered down in your basement trying to do anything but American Idol on TV, a total case might be more to liking. Peter Egan are you

The little ’62 Pacer I found been laying on its side in a somewhere with weeds in the carburetor, various barn haven’t set up home in the air cleaner it hasn’t been scavenged for that ended up on a Suzuki Cafe Racer. It’s Think of all the things you can do with little bike.

Oh sure, you can thousands of dollars to restore it to new… that will keep you from the torture of Idol…it will also you to choose between paying the bill or having the bike perfectly with the logo and hand painted, (go with the job…just my opinion). You can customize it to it look like a BIG Harley? If you so inclined.

This baby has a good story to go along it and, it does run and honestly, I I would just do a little clean up on it, not a restoration ( I wouldn’t repaint it ), get some new tubes for the so they hold air, and it. There is nothing cooler an old bike that proudly its age.

If you’re looking for a Harley Davidson motorcycle isn’t covered in chrome, chopped, bobbed, stretched, or customized (?) and, you won’t see at any of local bike hangout’s, is your ticket into the of cool.

Click on the pic’s for more about this little Harley. This is the one I have found that I and maybe, just maybe…I can the bank manager that the one I find might live A Harley in my garage.

Living and motorcycles here in Southern for most all of my life, I have pretty much everything around on two wheels. Every size, style and condition. stock to wild customs and in between. Southern California is for motorcycle people.

Year riding, more dealers and than probably the rest of the combined, all the major Japanese are based here, all the magazines…this is heaven for riders. Hey, we have Jesse James…uh, is a good thing though??

ago, I cut my canyon riding in the Santa Monica Mountains; Highway, Decker Canyon, Yerba Buena, Stunt (its real name), Canyon…and all without meeting the So far. Every ride a stop at the Rock Store. The Store is arguably the most Southern California motorcycle and a required stop on a Sunday along the Malibu coast. The Store is a Sunday bike that features every of motorcycle imaginable.

Custom Gold Wings, dirt scooter’s, cafe racers, Brit bikes and bicycles Harley Davidson, in general, is the of choice for the Rock Store baggers have become popular of late, you still see longbikes once in a while, a here and there, and more riding their own instead of on the

I met the owner once, remember his name right he told me all about his bike and why he did it. It was a story about a very and fast Harley.

That was the time I saw a really well Cafe Racer powered by Davidson. Until today.

morning on ebay is this 1989 ( ok, not really vintage but it’s my blog, my rules) Cafe Racer. The owner of bike has gone all out and I mean all First, he built up the motor to put out he thinks is an honest 70HP at the wheel, impressive for a Sportster.

modified the frame and suspension to it handle not like a Harley. sweet body work off a 750SS and an MV Agusta gas tank. bike is spectacular.

Harley Davidson’s is all over the map, literally and Getting designs from World War Two Germany, building in Italy, buying Italian manufacturers, The Motor Company couldn’t stand staying at in Milwaukee.

Little 2-… bikes from Germany, singles from Italy, dirt bikes from (the HD Baja 100 is universally as one of the worst dirt bikes built) all the way up to 1000cc Superbikes Italy as well. I think the HD liked pasta better schnitzel?

After WW2, as of the Reparations Act, certain were turned over to the one them being a motorcycle from the German firm DKW was well known for making motorbikes for the European market. the war America was looking for economical and Harley jumped on the bandwagon.

The of the baby Harley’s was the model 125 in A mind bending 3 HP little 2 roadbike. Sales of the 125 were not but also not bad. In 1953 upped the game with the new 165 ST.

The 5 1/2 hp would send you hurtling the road at breakneck speeds, women and children, dogs hide under the porch and the wouldn’t chase you because figured they would catch you…that last might be a bit of an exaggeration? The baby were reliable, economical roadbikes that just sell all that well. wanted economical transportation just not from Harley

What we wanted from is what we still want, big not toys.

I like small for lot’s of reasons and this I found this neat Harley on ebay. A 1955 165ST. It has been almost restored and probably wouldn’t much more to finish the There isn’t a whole lot of or details given by the owner he does have a good about the motorcycle and how he got it. The owner seems fairly adamant this is NOT a ‘Hummer’.

What’s a it is an updated, somewhat stripped version of the 125 model that came out in 1955. As I looked at bike something stood look at the gas tank, it’s the style tank that in made it’s way onto the huh. It’s got a very ‘buy it now’ price, but if you a Harley that is American just a whole lot smaller, this bike a good

Regular readers of these and the MotoWorld blog, www.themotoworld.com I love Cafe Racers. built a couple and ridden they are my favorite type of Some come out just and some, well…not so right. have the look and the performance, just the look.

I have rat bikes that the owner to pass off as a cafe bike, and that with only one or two details would make it Everybody has their own vision of a bike.

A Cafe Racer what you would call a ride…clip on’s or clubman rearset footpegs, a thinly seat that is farther because of the longer tank the reach to the bars even much further) and you certainly take your girlfriend for a that’s a good thing. A Cafe Racer has been down to the basics and hot rodded to go A Cafe Racer is the epitome of the ‘form follows function’.

In years even the factories sipped the Cafe Kool In 1976, BMW brought out the R90S, not full Cafe but going the style. The good thing BMW did was give the ‘S’ model a better and more power than a R90, form and function hand in hand.

Honda too their hand at a Cafe bike with the GB500. really gave a go at the British hence the moniker ‘GB’. The GB was a looking single cylinder that had the style, but just sell. Today, a nice GB fetch some good Even The Motor Company, Davidson, couldn’t resist the and Willie G’s first job as a stylist for was the XLCR Cafe Racer.

To the faithful it was blasphemous, and it didn’t

Now, I have never much into Harley don’t fit the lifestyle mold I but an XLCR is on my Christmas list and every year…honey, are you reading I love the styling of the XLCR, (I ‘ol Willie G did a great job), but are problems with the bike, the one…It’s an AMF Harley Davidson. A history here, in 1969 Davidson merged (sold out to) you know the people that bowling balls and machines.

( as marginal as it was anyway) dropped big and after twelve years of a reputation and lagging sales, Davidson bought itself Now, back to the XLR. the cool look, HD made a trick frame for the CR, they a Sportster front half an XR750 back half to the handling and it sort of worked. They the new bike a triple disc which was a good improvement the stock Sportster brakes.

The the stock Sportster 1000cc

I rode an XLCR a couple of and here’s my quick report…good Harley grunt at any RPM, in any the brakes feel like two of wood on the rotors; stock starves the motor, ignition can be at times (and always at the time, but that’s another handling is vague, and it’s Now, the good…good standard grunt at any RPM in any gear, it looks and I want one still.

I found my Christmas present morning on ebay. Up for auction is a beautiful 1978 XLCR. It had sitting in storage since and when it was brought out into the of day the new owner went right to This HD Cafe racer got a going over.

New tires, clutch and cable, brake a new SS carb (which the bike badly…not this bike per but all of ‘em) and a few other things. The says it is mechanically perfect. The has only 13,600 miles on it is not too many at all.

The bike got a gold pin striping job by the previous and looks just right on bike. The XLCR when sold for a whopping $3595, a nice one can lighten your by around $10,000. A good back then but who knew.

’72 Harley FX Night Train

Let me preface story with the old saying, is in the eye of the beholder”. Whether it be a woman, a or a motorcycle. Some are sleek, are curvy and sometimes you can’t in words why you think something is or why…not so much.

Every now and all motorcycle manufacturers fart and was one of Harley’s. Back in the late Willie G. Davidson (grandson of was promoted to VP of Styling at ‘The Company’. His first ‘design’ in 1970 with the ‘boat Sportster. Then in 1971 the ‘Super Glide’; red, and blue, ‘the big twin’ and…the boat tail.

reviewer’s loved the bike…to the public however, it went like a fart in church. The lasted all of two years. Now, to G’s credit, he next designed my Harley, the XLCR Cafe Sadly the XLCR didn’t either, yet…both are now quite prized, I mean priced.

about this, in 1971 a new Glide sold for a mere today a good one ‘starts’ at better investment than HD at this moment.

On ebay morning is a really nice ’71 Glide ‘Night Train’…means it was This bike has been in a dealership on display for years and is now up for The FX is in really nice and I do mean, nice condition.

The motorcycle has a less than 15,000 on it, has an upgraded front brake set up, a exhaust and other than a stone stock ’72 Super Pretty cool.

At the beginning of I said ‘beauty is in the eye of the beholder’, the Tails’ were not popular then. In 2006 Harley wheeled out the 35th Anniversary of the Super Glide…a new motorcycle the same classic red, and blue graphics accompanied a lot of press copy about the of the model. But wait, there’s missing.

Where’s the ‘Boat Apparently The Motor Company going to make the same twice.

You know what, if you up at your local Sunday hangout on an original Super or Night Train, you’ll get a lot attention than if you showed up on a quite the same thing’ edition. Get the real deal. FX on ebay looks like the for a very cool Harley

Oh, and one more thing…I swear bike has the original tires 1971…take a look at the pictures and me I’m wrong.

Then…if you get yourself a ‘vintage’ well…your cool factor way up. I found this one for you.

out this ’72. It has been through a bit, doesn’t all that many miles and good. There are a few updates need to be made, most the brakes. Fred Flintstone has brakes on his car. This a bike.

It hasn’t been and could turn out to be a very fun Let’s see, some bars, taller rear I’m just dreaming here. Two about this motorcycle I 1…the Sportster logo on the 2…the ’1000′ on the engine
