Harley Magazine Review XL1200C

Guilty as charged.

I it. I used to say that Harley-Davidson was diluting its bloodline by releasing a of dolled-up versions of its various over the last 20 years or so. I was that maybe the Motor was taking the joy of customization away the enthusiast by prepackaging its bikes in stylistic formats.

Yes, I may even been overheard that the massive corporation was the aftermarket with its extensive of accessories.

What changed my The simple, elegant Sportster 1200. As benchmark of the Sportster the XL1200C is the ideal entry-level It’s easy to handle, a decent amount of power.

The Harley-Davidson comes to building a the Classic 1200 is likely the generic bike in the entire H-D True, Harley offers a ton of faster, and/or sexier but to me, none of them are any more or satisfying to ride than one. It’s a faultless bike, a capable tourer, and a lot of fun to push through the twisties.

And when you ride with Sam you’d best be prepared to it.

As a commuter, the XL1200C is a dream. It big and heavy, nor is it wimpy. Instead, light, narrow, and easy to

Plus, it boasts ample (79 ft-lbs. of torque) and fantastic economy (42 mpg in the city). Around it’s the ideal urban big enough to be visible, yet nimble and enough to avoid hulking distracted drivers, and texting

Touring riders would prefer more creature and power, but in a pinch, the Classic admirably. At 57 mpg on the highway, you won’t a more fuel-friendly motorcycle. The holds a deceptive 4.5 gallons of On the highway, the five-speed transmission sounded as if it were winding and the comfortable ergonomics made the a pleasure on our two-day test run autumn.

The Classic features forward controls, which for me were for this particular bike.

A this size is maneuverable in a lot of ways, and one of my favorite methods of the Sportster Classic around was to hold the bars steady, and my weight while pushing one leg or the other. Throttle was plentiful, superb, and on that peaceful jaunt through upstate New with the Brothers Whitehead, the complied willingly and kept up with a

modicum of effort.

For H-D’s line of 1200cc is limited to four models: the new Nightster, Low, and Custom. The between the Custom and the Low are negligible, so I may as point them out here. It down to aesthetics: while the Low a 19″, 13-spoke, cast-aluminum wheel (same type as out the Custom was upgraded to a 21″ rim and snazzy, spokes.

The Low features midcontrols, as opposed to the forward ones. Both rock a black powdercoated Evo engine highlighted with covers, and both have staggered Shorty chrome pipes. The Low’s rear rail is black, while the is finished in chrome — same with the respective bikes’ headlights.

The seat height in the Low is indeed lower — but only by Its seat is discernibly narrower up though.

Harley’s press kit the Custom features a “low-rise and chrome pullback riser,” the Low boasts a “pullback handlebar on 1″ riser.” Whatever. In either the hand controls are easily The bottom line is that the bar is straighter and less buckhorn-like. are available in red, black, or two-tone, as well as custom of red/Cherry, and black/White Pearl.

The Custom we tested came in a blue/silver two-tone, a combo on the Low. Finally, the Custom run you $100 more than the up and down the line. Must be laced spokes.

So I admit it: I was It was foolish of me to claim Harley was itself too thin; H-D saw that one of its lines needed attention, and it down accordingly. Sure, are some niche bikes bewilder me — I’m looking at you, Bones — but the fact is that the Company knows its customers.

There’s not a motorcycle manufacturer on green earth that on customer feedback, good or as much as Harley-Davidson does, and its and enthusiastic fan base is evidence of H-D spends a lot of man-hours (and to find out exactly what its wants and needs, and damn if it provide it. So who am I to question Willie G. and

From now on I’d better just up and twist the throttle.

Besides, way up ahead of me by now.

In the past few years Harley’s us a wide range of styles and with its Sportster line. I’ve been able to most of them. Yeah, I it’s a tough job but somebody’s got to do it. The Custom doesn’t have low, flat black, 883 style I like, but it does comfort, classic lines, and an boost in power. This was a fun bike to ride: easy to around through twisty and solid at speed on the highway.

With a fairly generic it’s not my favorite Sporty, but as far as and everyday reliability go, the 1200 ranks high.
