Not a scooter and not a regular motorcycle, the DN-01 (Dream New Concept 1) a whole new classification — Honda calls Crossover.

futuristic machine combines and sportbike styling cues a fully automatic transmission, low height and a very capable First shown to the public as a at the 2005 Tokyo Motor the DN-01 was proclaimed production at the 2007 Show.

Designed for everyday and spirited backroad riding, the is powered by a 680cc, liquid-cooled V-twin engine with 52 between the cylinders. The compact has a 10:1 compression ratio and is 61 horsepower at 7,500 rpm and 47.2 of torque at 6,000 rpm at the crankshaft. debuted this powerplant on the European DN-01 and the XL700V

Honda’s excellent PGM-FI injection employs two 40mm bodies and 12-hole injectors for fuel atomization. A closed-loop system uses an oxygen and a catalyst to reduce emissions, an auto-enrichment system eliminates the for a choke. The bike starts and provides quick throttle and excellent drivability.

Power is sufficient for everyday and highway touring, but it’s not quick. There’s very vibration, and at speed it’s so and quiet it almost seems an electric vehicle.

What really the DN-01 apart is its hydro-mechanical drive, dubbed the HFT (Human Transmission). Honda reports current design constraints that engines larger 700cc require a transmission larger and heavier than a manual transmission. Hence, a V-twin was designed to work the HFT and the bike was basically built the transmission.

Not to be confused with belt-converter systems used in or semi-automatic transmissions (which shift between conventional without a manual clutch), the HFT engine power to drive a swash plate to convert from the rotating motion reciprocating motion inside the pump. The swash plate pistons arranged in a circle in the body, causing them to the hydraulic fluid.

This pressurized fluid is by a timed distributor valve to a set of pistons located in the hydraulic and these motor-side pistons against another swash the angle of which can be varied to changes in ratio. A lockup is used to reduce power and improve efficiency, and a starter provides a neutral for easy and stop operation.
