A pro’s not-so-pro bike: Amy Balance AL-750

When Amy (Telent-Fidea) wasn’t piloting her Ridley X-Fire around a course, she was meandering through streets on this 1996 AL-750. And yes, it’s as as it appears James Huang/Future

I write this with a heart and flowing tears as just learned that Amy was … while out on a training only a few days after in Belgium for the start of the 2013-2014 season. Amy was not only a rising in cycling but also a friend, one departure won’t be quickly by me or many others in the Boulder scene.

Before she left for Amy pushed me to write this Pro bike profile of her trusty old Always the good sport, she was so of that thing despite all of us poking fun at her about it. Much Amy, I’d say this was perhaps a little quirky but lovable.

Rest in peace, Amy D. I wish given you a bigger hug when we goodbye, but know you’ll be in the embrace of your family and now and forever. We all miss you terribly.

ever-present good humor was

American cyclocross racer Amy normally spent time on her Ridley X-Fire as part of the Telenet-Fidea squad. However, didn’t provide a townie to use she was at home in Boulder, Colorado, so she got done on a decidedly beat-up, Balance AL-750 cobbled with a scraped together of salvaged bits. If you think sounds a little rough, spot on.

Dombroski’s Balance – she insisted on pronouncing it bah-lahn-say – has the history. It originally belonged to her brother, Dan, who started mountain bikes when the two still living at home in back in the mid-90s.

It used to have a Softride on it and everything was purple anodized on it, said. It was my brother’s first bike, the first bike he of got a deal on.

After her brother was finished it, the purple beast was then on to fellow Vermonter Lea Davison – now a rider for Specialized. According to Davison’s mountain bike actually started on that which was then handed off yet to her sister, Sabra.

It made other mountain bike ever ridden feel an absolute dream, Lea Davison BikeRadar. But, its purple, and suspension stem was just to make me fall head heels — literally and figuratively, the was pretty unforgiving on east tech — in love with biking. So, really, the Balance was one of the bikes I’ve ever because it was the hook.

Only after all of that the younger Dombroski inherit the now aluminum workhorse as her first bike when she moved to Coupled with the fact the Davison sisters now operate Bellas, a non-profit mountain organization for young girls, fair to say that the humble has gotten quite a few women the sport.

Dombroski picked bars because she could a pizza box on them

These though, Dombroski’s Balance quite the thoroughbred it once was now been bastardized into a with as little money as possible. Any semblance of trail has gone by the wayside, replaced by a of components that would any dumpster diver proud.

The suspension fork was been with an old Orbea ‘cross from Dombroski’s days for the Luna squad – which, makes the Balance a 69er – the Cycling front wheel is a from when she raced for the Bella team, the Shimano XT drivetrain was replaced with a singlespeed setup, and Dombroski even recall the origins of the wheel.

It was sitting in our garage my brother and I were living and I have no idea where it from, she said. But the hub is awesome I don’t even really a bell because it’s so

Because that rear is so out of true, Dombroski also do with just a front

Not all of the component decisions were purely by happenstance, however. said she had her choice between an old LP carbon-and-Kevlar fiber flat bar and the cowhorns shown here. she decided on the latter but not for the typical

I chose [the Syntace so I could go and pick up pizza my brother and I didn’t have a car we moved out here and those bars worked really for holding the box, she said.

We had the of taking Dombroski’s steed out for a and not surprisingly, it runs about as as it looks. And yes, it’s a bit

Even so, Dombroski insisted her beloved Balance was hardly relegated to bike lanes and

Oh, it sees dirt all the time!
