Caparo T1

What is it?

On paper the brain child of ex-McLaren Ben Scott Geddes and Graham who have recently been in their quest by none than Gordon Murray (he who created the McLaren F1 road

In reality it’s also the accelerating road car in history, and the only car to find yourself in, next to a Bugatti Veyron, for the traffic lights to go green.

right: ‘it’ can only be the 1075bhp-per-tonne Caparo T1. And this is the place in the world where you can find out what it’s to drive

Tell me more…

The headline figures are all just unprecedented for a road car, is kind of what you’d given the team of people has created it.

The chassis-tub is made entirely carbonfibre and the suspension, brakes, engine and gearbox all bear an resemblance to the sort of items find on a cutting edge seater racing car.

of course, the T1 isn’t a single it’s a one plus three (fat blokes – or birds – well be able to squeeze into the second seat without disassembling the car around that’s where they’ll for the rest of their lives).

The was meant to be a 2.4-litre V8 with but as the car evolved the engine grew to a 3.5-litre V8 that’s essentially a detuned Indycar engine 575bhp at 10,500rpm and “around” ft of torque.

All up, the car we drove – one of just two models in existence – weighed 535kg, giving a power-to-weight well beyond the magic planned from the very 1000bhp per tonne. A 2007 F1 car has no than 1350bhp per tonne, in case you wondered.

The gearbox is a six-speed paddle manual, and although it features new that makes it smoother for use, again this is much an established competition similar to the straight cut Hewland used in Indycar racing.

it do then? We haven’t yet strapped our gear to the car, but Caparo the T1 will get to 60mph in 2.5sec, in less than five and do 0-100-0mph in a quite staggering (we timed the Veyron at a piffling for 0-100-0mph).

Top speed is limited by the package and on the car we drove was somewhere 190mph, but if a customer wants a low car that’ll do over 200mph won’t be a problem, sir. Oh and the price is £190,000 plus taxes, so call it £211,000 in the UK.

What’s it like?

In a word or absolutely un-flipping-believable. At a … it other track day specials as the Lotus 2-Eleven feel they are stuck in first

To begin with the acceleration is so it borders on being uncomfortable. driven a Jaguar R3 F1 car that had one of the older, more powerful V10 and I’m not joking when I say the T1 isn’t a miles away on raw acceleration. And it has traction to go with it, despite the car having no form of traction beyond your brain and right foot (a full TC will be made available on cars).

But what really blows mind are the brakes. And the amount of the T1 can generate through a 140mph gear corner. They say pull over 3g – most cars start to slide off the at not much more than 1g.

And the way you can hear yourself groaning the strain through a fast you don’t feel inclined to the claims.

The brakes are also ridiculous compared with of other, supposedly fast cars. You think a Porsche 911 GT3 RS tidy when you lean on the pedal?

Be prepared to have imagination completely recalibrated, the T1 is in an entirely different league

It’s one of those cars in you can drive right up to the apex of a at full noise and then dump 80mph in a heartbeat. And make track days much a case of; “Is there a turning up? Because if so I don’t I’ll bother, thanks…”

I buy one?

Do you want a road runabout that’s also the last word in track day The let’s put it this way; the car won Le Mans for Bentley a few years ago was any quicker than the T1 around and an F3 car is several second slower circuits such as Mallory and Park.

What you’re about is the sort of speed will enable you to lap people in Ferrari F430s and 911 Turbos as if were standing still. In of which £211,000 doesn’t seem quite so ridiculous. And there is nothing – and I really do nothing – else like it £211k could even be of a bargain.
