Anyone of buying a pocket-sized four-wheel-drive not feel they are heading out on a or somehow going it alone. In the smaller-sized 4WDs comprised half of all off-roaders sold year; or, to look at it another about one in 12 of all vehicles sold in is a compact 4WD.

Of those, the Honda CR-V is one of the popular choices, even if it has the clear advantage of being the leader it was when the first was introduced. The latest CR-V much stiffer competition its forebears, with rivals as the Nissan X-Trail, Subaru and Toyota RAV4 all giving it a run for its money.

That’s not to say CR-V are floundering, and a recent upgrade to mechanical and cosmetic features serve to cement its position and Chief among them has replacing the four-speed automatic a five-speed unit, and the four-wheel-drive — which engages to the rear wheels once the tyres start to spin has been revised for quicker times.

Handling gets a boost stiffer stabiliser bars and tyres on 16-inch rims, and the brakes are bigger front and

Cruise control is now standard on all while side airbags been fitted to the front of the more upmarket CR-V which also gets MP3 for its stereo system.

There’s a different look as well. The upright and boxy body is the same as before but its bulging are slightly more prominent, and the front bumper and tail have also been the nip/tuck treatment.

Prices changed, with the base manual remaining at $31,990, the auto option is still despite the upgrade to five It might sound a bargain, but include Honda’s bonus reduction from the start of the

The CR-V Sport tested is a $36,749 proposition but includes a bit for the extra $5000. As well as body-coloured exterior trim there’s the side airbags and MP3 plus sunroof, alloy and fog lamps. Those wanting to go can specify leather trim for the gear shift and steering which costs an extra

The 2.4-litre engine remains although its full 118 kW of power really need upgrading. The news is that when with the new auto, performance is enhanced: acceleration is strong with shortened gaps ratios, there’s more urge between shifts, and a ability to pick the right for the job on demand.

Less endearing is the clumsy itself, which sprouts the dashboard, presumably to leave between the front seats and a greater impression of roominess. it works on a kind of pull-push there’s little chance of the correct ratio manually any accuracy and it is a hindrance to anyone who low-speed crawler gears for Ditto with the handbrake, pulls out of the dash and can not only jam fingers but can also be surprisingly to disengage.

Not that the CR-V has any reputation for bush-bashing, but the improved 4WD will indeed help. a computer select 4WD after the start to slip has never a wonderful idea, but at least now it can be to happen more quickly. It is particularly useful on slippery roads where front is now minimised by the rear-drive coming play more readily.

That, and a little more grip, have done for the CR-V’s road manners. The stabiliser bars also by reducing leaning (or body through corners, not to mention the front tyre’s tendency to and possibly start spinning. still some of the steering tug (or torque steer) noticeable accelerating out of tight corners, is one of the less appealing of the CR-V’s manners.

Together with the engine, the intelligent transmission and handling ability, the new CR-V is pleasant to drive and far less

The current CR-V has been in a couple of areas, most its square-rigged styling and roly-poly The latter has been resolved well, even if the car’s extreme look is open to But with lots of extra and moderately improved road the updated CR-V is one of the better in its class.
