Bike Shopping Again…

A lot of people seem to think that I should have “learned my lesson”  and give up on the idea of owning a motorcycle after getting in an accident last  year on my last one.  Hit and run, totally not my fault, and the insurance company decided to total the bike.  I thought I could hold off for a bit, but I’ve already started shopping trying to figure out which bike I want.

So here are the contenders, in no particular order.

Hooligan Number 1 – Triumph Speed Triple

I pretty much just love the way this bike looks.  It actually isn’t really anything special technology wise I suppose, and a fairly standard “naked” bike.  Triumph just pretty much wins in the history department for cafe racers, street fighter, hooligan style motorcycles.

There is something about this style of bike that I like a lot.   Sporty yet urban, and while it has almost every bit of performance that you’d find from a race bike for your average use, it doesn’t get the perception of a street racer.  Which is handy as I found out last year, both police officers and punk kids in Honda’s who’ve replaced their exhaust with a coffee can seem to have it out for sport bikes.

Hooligan Number 2 – Ducati Streetfighter S

Ducati Streetfighter S

Um, it’s a Ducati.  Italian, red, and beautiful.  I honestly like it slightly better than the Triumph from just sitting on the two, when the weather gets nicer I’ll have to see about taking them for a test ride and seeing if there is a difference worth noting.

The only downside is Ducati is also kind of known for being expense to maintain or repair.  Something that Ducati is actually trying to prove otherwise now, and other than their extremely high-end motorcycles they really aren’t as badly priced as people would lead you to believe.  There’s still the perception that they’re the Ferrari of the motorcycle world though.

The Last Hooligan – BMW R 1200 R

thing for blondes, whiskey, or super models; you don’t really need to (or can) explain it.  There are some great logical  reasons for it too, they have some great safety equipment and their motorcycles tend to live forever.  This year they released a naked bike again with their 1200 CC boxer engine.

Probably the least sexy of the urban hooligan bikes I like, but still can’t get away from it.

One of These Things is not Like the Others – BMW F 800 GS

BMW F 800 GS

I’m not sure when I fell completely in love with the GS line, but I’m pretty sure that going to a Honda dealership and having the salesmen tell me I should go get one instead of the bike I was looking at as he showed me pictures of taking his through Alaska was a good starting point.  Watching Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman take them around the world and down to the Cape Town, South Africa definitely put the rose on the whole affair.

Yes they make a bigger one and yes they often get referred to as the SUV of the motorcycle world.  But it isn’t a horrible comparison, this isn’t like some Lexus that will never get more than a gravel road to grandmother’s house, this is like the original Land Rover Defender, capable of going anywhere and conquering the African jungles in the 1920s.  This is the bike I want when I think about getting on the back of something and disappearing for two weeks.

I Don’t Want to Die – BMW S 1000 RR

Since it was introduced it has been the talk of the motorcycle press.  It has won every

single liter bike comparison test that anyone has wanted.  Sophisticated and technically brilliant with multiple forms of ABS and Dynamic Traction Control.  It also has more horsepower than the majority of cars on the road and weights less than the average NFL player.

So other than winning the lottery and buying all of them, I need to pick something from that group.  Anyone have a suggestion?
