Engineering Students Build 2 Drive Hybrid Prototype

In 2012 we can expect the fuel increasing to unimaginable levels. are the days when petrol was for 40 rs per liter. There is a reason why fuel hungry yet fun, 2 strokes were wiped out of the of the planet earth.

Being a 2 fan myself i can only dream them making a comeback. when four Automobile students and our friends at VMKV college Salem, found a way to a hybrid combining the good old 2 fun, and practicality and efficiency of an motor.

The Hybrid.

In theory it similarly to the much advanced available in the market. The fuel engine and the base vehicle is a TVS ES which displaces 59.9 cc. The 2 aircooled single produces at 5500 rpm and 4.5 nm of torque at 5000 The electric motor/generator is fixed on the hub on custom forks tricked out to the 250 watt brush-less DC motor.

Battery pack which the electric motor consists of 20 ah 12 volt Maintenance free batteries connected in series. the battery is done by the electric itself in generator mode.

are different ride modes and custom made Electric (ECU) switches and controls the of electric motor/generator and/or according to the modes selected. selection switches are fixed on the and their corresponding indicator which tell you which you are on are also fixed here. is simple enough for everyone to

Mode selection switches and LEDs on the other side.

The custom made console a speedometer and a battery charge gauge. The blue part on the indicates the electric motor to switchover range.

The riding are the most important aspect of the and much work has gone tweaking and polishing the modes to efficiently.

Mode 1 – Petrol. is the default setting and there is no for this mode. Scooter like every other scooter. Battery charging during this mode at any speed.

Mode 2 – Electric. the toggle switch for this is activated the ECU automatically switches off the and the electric motor takes Maximum speed supported at mode is 25-28 kmph.

3 – Power mode. This activates both electric and engine, bumping the torque and hp Now the scooter turns into a 2 drive fun machine till 25

To ensure that the electric gets enough power for enough, the ECU switches off the electric and turns it into a generator the speed exceeds 25 kmph and charging. When the speeds goes down below the ECU switches from generator to electric motor mode. In mode the Scooty has enough to propel a rider and a pillion on a uphill climb from a stop!

Mode 4 – Hybrid. is the most interesting mode. this mode is activated The ECU the electric motor on and switches off the till speeds not exceeding

When the rider twists the and wants to go faster than 25 the electric motor is switched off and it is into a generator by the ECU and the engine is on. This also initiates after 25 kmph. When the is again reduced to 25 kmph or the engine is switched off and the electric switches from generator to electric motor mode.

Now fuel efficiency is maximized. neat!

The Hybrid in action.

with all these modes the also housed an external circuit for practicality. The scooter can be from any household 240 volt outlet.

The 240 volt external plug for battery charging.

efficiency has increased Emiison have reduced almost 2 The engine when run on petrol delivers 40 kmpl. Now a stock ES will deliver about

The reason for this low value is of the electric motor/generator which a load on the engine. This is not a because the electric motor for this 10kmpl decrease in efficiency when speed is 25kmph.

When the engine burns one of petrol it will recharge the to 80% in Mode 1.  With an 80% charge the can propel you further for 35kms. gives a combined fuel of 75kmpl! In full charge the can power the motor for 50kms and along with 1 liter of you can go 90 kms! For some who ride 100cc 4 strokes, this is not sky high. But there were because of the budget.

The battery for one has bought second hand so are several other parts. enough budget and support the team is confident that can make the kilometer per liter go past 100 and maybe a 150! We at wish them all the best for future endeavors.
