First Look: 2014 Honda Valkyrie

Big. Mean. New. We dig all three of these features.

What happens when you take one of the biggest bike out there — the ever-popular Honda Goldwing — strip it of almost 150 lbs by dropping the fairing pieces and other, ‘unnecessary weight,’ and then sit down across that still-massive engine? You get a rocket-like trip on two wheels, thanks to the new 2014 Honda Valkyrie.

This bike isn’t so much a motorcycle as it is a rocket engine with two wheels. Honda has kept the massively powerful flat-6 engine from the Gold Wing line of bikes and just done a fantastic job of giving the people what they want — lots of power, none of the flair.

The Valkyrie has been missing from Big Red’s lineup for over a decade now, with the original Valkyrie lineup running from 1996-2003. This latest incarnation, though, has all the futuristic, sharply angled lights and edges that is becoming more and more common on some of Honda’s cruisers and non-street bikes, and frankly we like this look. It makes the bike look like nothing out there on the road, rather than trying to compete with the bikes that are already ingrained in people’s minds.

The 2014 Valkyrie isn’t trying to compete with the Harley clones out there…it is trying, and in many ways succeeding, at being it’s own, fierce animal.

The flat-6 engine that tries its hardest to push the massive Gold Wing sits ready to roar and push you up to your breaking point in this not-quite-nimble-but-not-too-giant frame. It’s an 1832cc liquid-cooled horizontally opposed six-cylinder engine, and it takes up most of the bikes comparatively-light 750 pound curb weight.

ABS will be available as an option, which we would HAVE to take on a bike with this much weight and pure thrust, which makes us wish it came standard rather than being tacked on at the dealership via options. The lights are similar to what we’ve seen in other 2013-2014 Honda models, and are all LED lamps that make the make more easy to see in all riding conditions. And, if you want to add back some of the weight that Honda shredded for this bike, you have the additional options of adding in saddlebags, LED foglights, a backrest, luggage racks and more.

Look out for the 2014 Honda Valkyrie to hit dealer floors in April of 2014, with available colors currently listed as being this awesome Blue Metallic that we’re showing off today, along with a flat black and a Dark Red Metallic. The pricing has not been set, but most of us are expecting the bike to debut somewhere around the sub $18,000 area.

Stay tuned for more when the official press introduction happens sometime in the first quarter of 2014!
