Here’s a low down on Honda’s 6 new motorcycles headed to EICMA 2012

Honda will unveil not one, not two, but six new motorcycles at EICMA 2012. Of these, three motorcycles will share the brand new 500cc, parallel twin four stroke engine that the Japanese motorcycle giant will use on the CBR500R, the CB500X and the CB500F. These motorcycles now even have a price tag to boot, with the US price of CBR500R being $5,999, a price which is just $1,800 more than the CBR250R.

Honda seems to have touched the sweet spot in terms of pricing when it comes to the CBR500 series as the CB500F sells for $500 lesser than the CBR500R. The pricing of the CBR500X tourer is yet to be disclosed.

All three motorcycles in the CBR500 range will be powered by the 500cc parallel twin engine that produces 54 Bhp for unrestricted markets while restricted markets like Europe get a 47 Bhp state of tune. The motorcycles will be targeted at new products from competitors like Kawasaki and KTM. With Honda unveiling three different forms of the CBR500 platform, a wider range of buyers will be targeted.

For the sportsbike buyers, the CBR500R is the one to opt for, for streetbike buyers, Honda offers the CB500F and for touring enthusiasts, the CB500X seems the right fit.

By packaging the 470cc liquid cooled parallel twin engine in three distinctive packages, Honda has ensured that it can appeal to a wide segment of motorcycle buyers. This approach allows Honda to save a chunk of money instead of developing three different motorcycles from scratch. By the looks of it, platform sharing is getting bigger amongst motorcycle makers as well.

This will translate into bigger profits for motorcycle companies even as it allows these companies to price their new motorcycles more competitively.

Coming to other three motorcycles Honda will unveil at EICMA 2013, the Honda CBR600RR super sports motorcycle gets a brand new Repsol paint job, better suspension and new aerodynamics. The inline four engine and other bits are expected to be unchanged. Also, the Gold Wing gets updated with the F6B model for 2013. Retro motorcycle fans get the Honda CB1100. More details about these motorcycles will be available in just a bit.

All three motorcycles, the CBR600RR, the Gold Wing F6B and the CB1100 aren’t slated for Indian launches.

Rather, Honda will target the developed markets like USA and Europe with these motorcycles. For India, motorcycles based on the CBR500 are a strong possibility given that all three motorcycles can be assembled through CKD kits or for that matter even produced in India, just like the CBR250R. Expect Honda to launch the CBR500 in India, as an answer to the likes of the KTM Duke 390 and the Kawasaki Ninja 650R.

The Honda CBR500R could straddle the segment in between the Duke 390 and the Ninja 650R in terms of price and positioning. Given that the Honda CBR500R is priced at USD 6,000 in the US of A, an Indian price of about INR 3 to 3.5 Lakhs sounds just right for this high performance motorcycle.
