History of the Honda GI1100

In the early 1970s, Honda decided to expand its motorcycle line into more uncharted motorcycle territory. A Honda engineering team led by Shoichiro Irimajiri, who had a background in Grand Prix racing, set out to design a large, tour-type motorcycle. The product of their endeavor was the M1 motorcycle. This giant motorcycle (especially for the 1970s) had a piston output of 1,470 cc, just two shy of doubling Honda’s largest previous offering, the 736-cc CB750.

In fact, the M1’s motor was larger than some car engines of its day. This motorcycle set the foundation for the GL1100.

GL1100 Production

In order to keep up with the increasing engine sizes of rival companies Yamaha and Kawasaki, Honda released the larger GL1100 Goldwing. This motorcycle became available in 1980, and Honda continued to sell the GL1100 until 1983. The GL1100 featured a 1,085-cc engine.

However, one of the most important changes the GL1100 incorporated over the GL1000 was the inclusion of a factory-installed fairing. Honda decided to include a fairing on the GL1100 after their research showed that owners attached after-market fairings to approximately 80 percent of the GL1000s sold.
