Engine

Both the base and ABS 2005 GL 1800 drew power from a four stroke, horizontally-opposed six-cylinder engine. This engine had a displacement of 1832 cc. Its bore measured 2.9 inches and its stroke measured 2.8 inches. The engine had a compression ratio of 9.8-to-1.

This engine produced 118 horsepower at 5,550 rpm and 123.2 foot-pounds of torque at 4,000 rpm. Honda equipped it with a single overhead cam. The engine used a computerized fuel injection with automatic choke. Each cylinder had two valves.

A computerized digital ignition controlled the firing of the spark plugs. This bike also came equipped with a liquid cooling system.

Performance

In 2006, the Motorcycle USA website tested the 2005 GL 1800 and reported that it accelerated from 0 to 60 mph in 4.13 seconds, reaching 100 mph in 11.32 seconds. The GL 1800 passed the quarter-mile mark in 12.4 seconds at a speed of 109.4 mph. This review reported a highway fuel economy of 30 mpg at speeds averaging 80 to 85 mph.

Dimensions

In 2005, Honda built both variants of the GL 1800 on the same aluminum frame. This gave the bikes an overall length of 103.7 inches, with a 66.6-inch wheelbase. The motorcycles stood 57.3 inches in height, with a seat height of 29.1 inches. The GL 1800 had an overall width of 37.2 inches and a ground clearance of 4.9 inches.

Without fuel or oil, the ABS models weighed 800.3 pounds, and the base model weighed 793.7 pounds. Honda installed a 6.6-gallon fuel tank in both models. The truck provided 61 liters of storage space.

Wheels

In 2005, Honda outfitted both variants of the GL 1800 with size 130/70-18 front and size 180/60-16 rear tires. Both the front and rear wheels took disc brakes. A base model featured a pair of 296-mm-diameter discs on the front wheel and a single 316-mm-diameter disc on the rear wheel; each had 3-piston calipers. The ABS model used the same size discs and 3-piston calipers that came on Honda’s base model.

A GL 1800’s front suspension consisted of a 45-mm fork that yielded 140 mm of travel; the single-side, single-shock swing arm rear suspension allowed for 104 mm of travel.
