I this bike in 1995, being left a few bob by my lovely who sadly died in 94 (will love her to bits for helping me out ) But sure she’d be turning in her if she knew half of what spent her hard earned on !

Me and a good mate of had always wanted something mad and off road, having dabbled a bit in the with moto x bikes. So off we to see Mr Andy Taylor ( of P.R. of Calne Wilts,) An extremely bike rider ,on and off road. ( … a couple of years by a volvo driver towing a box ).

We asked him if he had a couple of 500’s we could have, an hour we were the proud owners of a and the CR. Both bought for Ј500.


Sorry. finaly to the subject. the main thing sticks in my mind about bike is that it was a B. A. STAR. D to it needed a full swing on the starter to get it going, but unlike my mate, ( who got his going quick) the fat it sometimes took me 5 mins to get it ( wish it had an electric start).

I tried bumping it down a hill in 5th gear. and it still until I jumped off the pegs and as my hit the seat. let the clutch out, away it went, still as if it was in 2nd. This bike lift the front wheel in all would plough through mud as if it was flat ground. and climb about any hill you came

I soon learned not to use 1st gear or the when on the move. It was light and to chuck around, especially racing a mate, it’s how your skill level when the red mist comes you.

It used to catch air so with so much power and after a few crashes ( remember feeling when you know lost it in the air, and not enough left to adjust for landing). I its ways. The CR was very forgiving you lost it due to the massive suspension Providing you’d set up the sag for your and the front end ( at the very bottom of the legs, ther are click for rebound damping and 2 air bleed on top, covered with car type dust caps ).

The damping rate for the rear end can be on the move by way of a thumbwheel screw on the shock remote gas reservoir.

I once. blasting along at throttle, must have doing about 60 — 70 the ground I was on looked totally then. out of nowhere, I came a 6ft ditch, that I hadn’t I thought oh … I’m last thing I remember was the throttle fully open, before diving in. and to my disbelief, the CR had it’s front wheel enough to clear the ditch( and my visit ) and make it to the other I opened my eyes again and I was still bombing along in a line. ( god bless that travel suspension. )

Had to weld up the frame once, the silencer, from heavy My fault for getting it wrong.

had a speedo. but I recon it must been good for around 100 mph


With such a piston ( I could get my fist the bore. ) I never had to change bore was still perfect, opened it up to check. I also steel clutch plates to enertia for starting. also traction in sloppy ground. the standard steel reed for plastic type, this throttle response. and adds power across the range, get an o’ ring chain as type will outlast cheap ones by about 3

I (being tight) drilled and tapped in grease on the suspension linkages, if this was a fitting it would last

You can check for wear in this by lifting the back mudguard, any will indicate a problem.

The rear tyre can be turned to provide an extended use. the will be nice and sharp !


So much fun, sure you invest in good body armour, or you’ll be fodder, in no time. Not for the faint But if you take the time to learn its this bike can be totally or quite docile. twist hand to choose.
