Honda debuts V4 concept and 2009 range at Cologne show

With 2008 marking Honda’s 60th anniversary as a company and 2009 celebrating the 50th anniversary of Honda’s participation in road racing, as well as the 30th anniversary of racing with an innovative 4-cylinder V-engine with oval pistons, Honda is today proud to unveil a World Premier V4 concept model, which signifies the beginning of a new era and design direction for the marque’s motorcycles based on Honda’s trademark 4-cylinder V-engine. The all-new CBF125 is the second World Premier model to be unveiled.

Considering these milestones and, as always, looking to the future, Honda has chosen ‘The New Beginning’ as the theme running through its participation at the Intermot show in Cologne, Germany, running from today until Sunday 12 October.

‘The New Beginning’ reflects on Honda’s extensive history and success in motorcycle development, but focuses on new technologies and challenges which will take motorcycling into a new era. A collection of successive V4 race machines and mass-market motorcycle models will be on display, showcasing and highlighting the various challenges that Honda has undertaken in order to create two-wheeled enjoyment for its customers by developing technologies that have been continuously advanced over Honda’s 60 year history and its participation in motorsports.

Honda further recognises the global trend within motorcycling and believes that creating products with an increased focus on value and style will be key for the future. At the same time, safety and environmental enhancements will continue to form fundamental themes in the development of motorcycle products.

Honda’s commitment to the future of motorcycling therefore encompasses road safety and along with two of its sports models now becoming available with a world-first Combined ABS system for sports bikes, Honda is also announcing details of a Vehicle to Vehicle Communication system which, through modern wireless technology, brings information to the rider about the proximity of other vehicles and the conditions of the road ahead, which will further progress motorcycle safety.

Commenting on today’s announcements, General Manager for Honda (UK) Motorcycles, Steve Martindale, said, “Today has highlighted the incredible heritage, reputation, experience and success that Honda has achieved over the last 60 years on two-wheels and the three milestone anniversaries are certainly something to be celebrated. But what is perhaps more important now is that Honda intends to further build on these qualities, along with the V4 design concept, in order to take motorcycles and, motorcycling more generally, in to a new and exciting era.

The addition of the CBF125 to Honda’s range will be a great boost for the UK market with the 125cc sector continuing to grow. The CBF125 combines the best features of Honda’s 125cc and naked models from over the years to provide a superb small motorcycle that doesn’t compromise style or performance and is also very economical to run. Motorcycle safety is something close to my heart and the advancements and innovative technologies that Honda is pioneering in this area are fundamental to the future of safe and enjoyable motorcycling.”

Prices and UK availability dates are yet to be finalised for each of Honda’s 2009 models, but the new motorcycle models and colours can be seen in the UK on Honda’s stand (1D20 – Hall 1) at the International Motorcycle and Scooter Show at the NEC in Birmingham, from 28 November – 7 December 2008.
