Honda NSF 100 Junior Trophy Round 2 and Results

29 March 2010

Northern Regions Championship

Round 2 — Zwartkops Raceway, 27 March 2010

Attracting a field of seventeen enthusiastic stars of tomorrow aged between 8 and 12 years old, the youngsters took to the circuit for qualifying just after 7:15am — the early start and cool conditions seemingly having little impact on their desire to post competitive times without delay.

Showing impressive form and maturity beyond his tender years, Wild William Friend made his intentions very clear early on, by posting a string of consistently quick times — matched only by the more experienced Sylvano de Aguiar. With the always fast, but crash-prone Themba Khumalo having a difficult time balancing speed and keeping his bike upright, Friend grabbed pole position with a time of 1:33.739 — from de Aguiar and Dylan Barnard — another rider maturing with every lap.

With Khumalo starting down in 11th place on the grid, race 1 was set to be a real thriller — but Wild William clearly wasn’t going to wait around for the others. He bolted off the line and into an immediate lead — never to be challenged, as he built up a 9 second lead by the end of the 6-lap race. Behind him, Khumalo sliced through the field to catch and pass de Aguiar for second place.

Dorren Loureiro took fourth, ahead of Barnard, with the top 10 completed by Troy de Klerk, Rohan Van Rooyen, Tyreece Robert, Keegan Wessels and Caedon Walker. Girl rider Lara Marais showed the boys she’s no pushover by finishing 15th, splitting Zimbabwean brothers Ryan and Glen O’Sullivan — and fellow debutant Ndumiso Ngcezula, all of whom have settled in well and quickly become friends with the entire group of riders.

Race 2 proved an exciting affair, with Khumalo once again starting from 11th on the grid, but this time not getting further than lap 3 — when he challenged de Aguiar for second place, but fell spectacularly as his attempt failed. Friend once again charged into an unassailable lead, which he increased lap after lap — ultimately winning by over 14 seconds. De Aguiar survived the Khumalo attack to hold onto second place from Loureiro and Barnard — who waged a race long war for third place.

Keegan Wessels improved on his first race 9th place to capture 5th after a thrilling dice with Troy de Klerk. Tyreece Robert took 7th place from Keagan Bontekoning and Rohan Van Rooyen, with Caedon Walker rounding out the top 10 once again.

In the points race, Friend leads with 95 from de Aguiar on 69 and Khumalo’s 52. Loureiro and Barnard are locked in a battle with 44 and 41 respectively. Rohan Van Rooyen lies 6th in the championship with 33 points, from Tyreece Robert on 28 and Caedon Walker on 23.
