Honda Silver Wing

I saw one of these at the dealer where we bought my wife’s Honda Metropolitan scooter. Wow this is not your daddy’s scooter:

A scooter that will cruise at 80 and break 100 mph and has ABS and PGM-FI? The build quality is (typical Honda) superb.

Anyway to make a short story LONG, I traded my KLR in on one of these. I really seldom used the KLR for what its intended purpose is, Adventure Riding. Basically I take short trips on street and once in a while a dirt road or two.

Never felt comfortable riding off-road solo as the KLR is too heavy for this old guy to lift up if it decides to lay down! Ask me how I know this. Not to say the KLR is a bad machine it is great for its purpose, I just finally realized that I needed (wanted) something different (read comfortable).

For dirt work I have my two CT’s and will probably have a CT long after I quit riding bigger machines.

Unhappy guy!

Got the new baby back to Wickenburg!

Off to Congress, AZ for a look at Frog Rock!

Some of you may recognize this! Anyway had a cold drink and then headed back home.

The scooter had 0 miles on the clock when I purchased it and by Saturday night had 103 miles on it! Gobs of power (50 hp) but very controllable ie not spooky fast like some crotch rockets. The CVT takes a bit of getting used to but it is virtually the same as Susan’s Metro so was expecting that.

The ride is much smoother, quieter, and more comfortable over all than the KLR. But again they are designed for different purposes.

Honda Silver Wing

Yesterday I decided to take the ‘Wing off-road. On a dirt road that is LOL. Took a road behind Vulture Peak here in Wickenburg, put nearly 3 miles on dirt, through gravel, hard pack, rocks and some sandy patches.

The big bird did well even in the sand, the weight is very low and the tires while small (14 inch) are wider than on the KLR so I had no problems. The ground clearance is the issue here but for most dirt roads I feel it will work fine for me!

King of the Hill

Damn, now I have to wash it.

I used to make fun of scooters until about 5 years ago in Cozumel Mexico when I rented a Honda scoot with over 20K on it and had a ball tooling around the island.

One other plus is Susan was always disappointed that we couldn’t ride double on the KLR, with the ‘Wing that is not a problem, the seat is set up well for two people. Should be fine for short rides or day-trips. Not enough storage for two-up touring but for just me wow, hold me back.

The Silver Wing is not cheap! MSRP is $9270 USD but that comes with ABS etc and it is a HONDA after all.
