Honda Oil Questions

Q. Dear Vincent, Had my bike with oil that had about 2,500 miles and in the bike about six months in constant use. During the winter here in Melbourne the bike had been sitting in my for six weeks but the oil had not been drained at still left there in the so the oil galleries were not drained and the oil filter still on.

After six of not starting the bike at all not even before hand, I drained the old oil and and put in fresh old and new filter. When I the bike the oil pressure light was on for 2-3 seconds then went no strange noises or nothing to that.

From the knowledge that I learned is that while the old oil is in the the galleries would have not at all and the buckets underneath the camshaft always have a little so to speak of oil any way. The camshaft including the big end and crankshaft journals always have oil as it doesn’t anywhere like gravity on a cylinder wall.

My 1998 model Honda onwards graphite impregnated aluminum wall so this would aid and long wearing any way correct. My question would be of a bike has done 18,000 miles have a molecular level in of oil on the walls unless its been there for a year or so.

The oils I use is always synthetic! So i just like to know to the cylinder walls if the engine has not run for 6 8 weeks and then drop the old oil and install a new filter and fresh oil and if it is of any waiting for the oil pressure to build up for the 2-3 seconds while the engine has

Does the modern synthetic leave along lasting film on the cylinder walls. or if has only been done this way is any cause of concern for wear as I normally warm the up before oil changes except one occasion in four years it was a bit cold outside to start it up and go for a about 50- Fahrenheit.

Thank you for answers in this :))

Best Regards,

A. If you want to know the properties of a synthetic oil, the place to go would be my Forum . I a synthetic oil expert there who can more information then you want to know.

As for graphite impregnated aluminum walls, I have never of aluminum cylinders in an automobile Admittedly I’m not up on my motorcycle but if aluminum is too soft for automotive cylinder walls, it seems to me it be too soft for motorcycle engine walls. All automotive aluminum blocks have a steel for the cylinders.

It is normal for the oil light to be on for two or seconds after an oil change. I done thousands of oil changes and this thousands of times. when the oil light doesn’t go out five seconds or so that you to worry.

Only once did I do an oil change and not get oil when I was done. And after hours of trying to figure out was wrong, I took the oil pan down and a rag wrapped around the oil pickup.

It the owner had the engine rebuilt a before and whoever did the work a rag inside the engine. Lucky me, I drained the oil this time the rag have dropped from it was hanging into the bottom of the oil

But you’re right, there is enough oil in the oil galleries and bearings to the wear of a start up.
