The Honda XL 600 is an off-road motorcycle of the Japanese car manufacturer Honda. The Enduro was produced from 1983 to 1987 in several series color designs and as a special model.

The XL600R (Model PD03) was established in 1983 as a higher-displacement sister brought the XL 500 R on the market, which was among many other detail changes, in contrast to the XL500R equipped with a hydraulic disc brake in front. In addition to the first model XL 600 R and other variants types were produced under an appropriate heading. Thus, among the 600 XL models can be distinguished:

For assignment to the year of manufacture based on chassis numbers see below under model history.

The origin of the enduro concept, the competing manufacturers and the initial offer of a vehicle equipped with a so-called pro-link monoshock off-road motorcycle by Honda XL 500 see also R. The model offered in 1983 has been revised from PD03 built in 1985. Among other things, these were in a revised technical details engine, more comfortable frame-mounted passenger footpegs (before mounting to the swingarm), a stronger fork (now 41 mm diameter, 39 mm before). The PD03-special edition XL600L Paris-Dakar was equipped with a larger tank and had a different design.

A list of all production years facilitated the determination of the actual year of manufacture (since the year of first registration does not necessarily also the year of production, because there were some dead stock). Called the first digits of the 11-digit vehicle identification number (eg: PD035000123) and the engine version of the XL600 at delivery. The color listed on the label under the seat on the frame next to the specified original color model code indicates the year of manufacture (eg D = XL600RD 1983 XL600RE = 1984 XL 600 RF = 1985, etc.):

In all models of virtually identical, air-cooled single-cylinder engine works with the designation Radial Four Valve Combustion (RFVC). With a cylinder bore of 100 mm and a stroke of 75 mm (PD03) of the four-stroke engine has a displacement of 589 cc and produced without throttling a rated output of 44 hp at an engine speed of 6500 rpm. Due to the then applicable insurance classes in Germany, the various models were there as a 27-PS version with a different VIN on the market (see list).

The reduction was carried out by a different camshaft, translation and jetting. The piston runs in an aluminum cylinder with cast iron cylinder liner on. The gas exchange takes place by four radially arranged valves that are actuated by rocker arms of an overhead camshaft. In the first model, a fifth, smaller valve for decompression served with the kickstart. The transmission has five gears.

The typical single-cylinder engines for strong engine vibrations are reduced by one driven by balance shaft gear. The engine lubrication is done by pressure with dry sump lubrication. The engine start is with the PD03 via Kickstarter and is facilitated by an automatic compression release.

The XL 600 RM and LM were additionally offered with a starter.

A weak point of the engine had the cylinder head with the plain bearing in the middle of the three camshaft bearings and valve seats, which often fell from its guides with higher mileage or heavy use. The second vulnerability is the alternator, often failed by the Zündladespule the Zündprimärspule. Intact cylinder heads are now hard to find and expensive spare parts traded.

In contrast to the later models installed on the XL 500 RFVC engines tend to have oil leaks on the cylinder head.

Otherwise, the engine is a very durable and reliable single-cylinder engine capacity of this was when properly maintained also through higher mileages. He is seen as the basis for development of the drives later models such as the NX 650 Dominator, SLR 650, XBR 500, GB 500 Clubman from 2005 or the Honda FMX 650th The successful and first built in the XL 600 basic design of the engine has been maintained to this day and is in the current model range in the U.S. with the Honda XR 650 L.
