Honda’s New Mid Concept – Please Honda Don’t Make This

Remember in the days of simplicity? Remember when there was no internet, no mobile phones? You knew where you stood in those days.

Jaguar was a British luxury car manufacturer, Mini had gone the way of the Dodo, Ford was the main car manufacturer and Honda was the main motorcycle manufacturer.

Everyone had a Honda, just like everyone had a Ford of some description. Now, now however things have changed. Don’t get me wrong it’s good that there’s more choice, we welcome more motorcycle manufacturers, it is a good thing.

But at the same time it’s sad to see once great powerhouses not fairing well.

Ford have issues, they bought everyone they could see and ended up churning out cars across different manufacturers that looked exactly the same. And inside, dear god, the inside of a modern Ford, particulary in Europe, looks like a Picasso, and not the Citroen, or when he was good!

For us, we see Honda doing the same thing. They dominated everything at one stage, from racing to road, but now that’s gone it seems it’s all about sales.

The next stage is for them to try and buy some other manufacturer, but in the mean time they’ll settle for turning out bikes that only mothers could love. Sorry, I’m sure some of you really like these designs, but they just don’t float our boats.

And now, now this. Take the front end of the new CBR and wack it on a scooter! Why not? Hey, that’s a great idea, that’ll sell!

And that, we imagine, is how Honda have arrived at the, and check this for a name, New Mid Concept. Dubbed the ‘ultimate travel tool’ by Honda, they’re nothing if not modest!

Honda claim it “reinvents the way we look at two wheeled travel”, hard to disagree with them on that one. I LOOK at it and immediately see why I would never buy one.

Honda say this bike takes the ‘spirit’ of a sport motorcycle (or the front end) and the ‘comfort’ of a scooter (a scooter) and combines them to create a ‘totally new format’ (something quite ugly).

It will feature a dual clutch transmission (from the VFR1200F), 17 inch wheels with Pro-Link rear suspension, radial tyres and (why oh why) front fairing air vents.

“The New Mid Concept from Honda – challenging the way we travel”, or the way we feel, and we feel sick. Sorry Honda, take a look at the BMW concept scooter, or the Mini, or the Smart. These are good concepts that we would love to see made.

This, this is not.
