Note: Comments below are all and open for your own interpretation, but the to and fro in the old files sure seem to the conclusion offered.

I’ve digging through bales of tonight, trying to sort out was going on back then. It the original UK importer and distributor was UK, which was reorganized into in 1962. They got the bikes European Honda Motor G.m.b.H. in Hamburg.

Seems was a good bit of rivalry between with the European outfit tricks with spares and making their own back-room with British retailers, leaking details of upcoming to one of the English motoring papers in of Hondis getting the info.

Any complaints that were to Honda Europe went to head office in Japan, though the majority of them I can see in the files were the result of the bunch messing up spares or leaking info to the press. very much like were trying to discredit so they could take the for themselves. This is all conjecture on my of course, but the letters to and fro in the old files seem to indicate friction.

The attempts by Hondis to secure with Gary Hocking, etc, are interesting reading as It seems Hocking had been let go by and about to sign with when approached by Hondis. however were contracted to use Castrol Oil in their race so it meant Hocking couldn’t for them if he signed with

The rivalry I’m talking was not between the Japanese and Europeans. It was Honda Europe, based in and Hondis (the UK distributors). The in the German office seemed to be trying to screw things up for the distributors by withholding spares were badly needed, access to race bikes they had on hand until it was nearly too late for the race, and trying to raise trouble for the outfit with the Japanese office.

Seemed odd to me, as the head lad at was a George von Lowenstein or some Germanic handle. The bikes all to have to go through Honda then get shipped on from to Britain.

While Hondis were to have exclusive distribution in the UK, there are letters of complaint on from the managing directors of of Oxford. They were of the largest motorcycle dealers in at the time; Mike Hailwoods’ outfit. Old Stanley Hailwood had stepped down as managing then.

Apparently Kings’ a chain operation with sales, and they had no information the new Honda 50 models at all until one of much smaller competitors in started selling the things.

The outfit had been supplied from Hamburg, while the UK distributors were unable to the same machines to their network of retail outlets. to say the folks at Kings were than pleased, and making noises about abandonning the

At the same time, someone at the Honda outfit in Hamburg details of the next model racing bikes to one of the weekly papers. That infuriated all the papers, of course, which Hondis’ relationship with the press, and also detered a of customers who had placed orders for the model years’ bikes. opted to cancel those orders and wait until the new were released, leaving holding the bag for the current years’ on hand and embarassing all concerned.

all this was going on, large of spare parts for Hondis in the UK ignored and left unfilled for by European Honda in Hamburg. the retail customers wrote of complaint directly to European because they thought the was the fault of Hondis in England, the mob were only too happy to the letters of complaint directly to office in Japan, creating a bad for the folks at Hondis.

Reading through the correspondence and forth between Hondis, Honda and Japan it looks much like the folks in were deliberately trying to Hondis in order to gain the market for themselves. Seems a business technique.

Interestingly we’ve just come a Christmas card sent to Jon in by Mr. Neuchi, the chap who later ran Honda Motor Trading. pre-dates the initial contact Honda in Japan and Maico in 1959, so Jonathan must been in correspondence with the long before the establishment of the UK network.

Left . Here’s the ad Honda put in Cycling on Sept. 17, 1959, for a local distributor.
