Expert: Jack May —

QUESTION: I have a Honda vtr 250. The bike will not when it is dark out. The starts just fine the daylight. It acts like it is when I try to start it at night and I go out the next day and it fires right up. I am as to why it won’t start at night but the day starts up over and over

Headlight works just too.

ANSWER: Hi Robert!!

Ya I once had a 1980 Suzuki When I rode it to work at the brakes were fine. I rode it home at 7pm, the were fine. But if I rode it the hours of 11am thru the front brakes would to lock and wouldn’t release.

Turned out there was air in the brake splitter, and cuz I live in Hawaii, the sun heat up the air in that splitter and the brakes to actuate. Come 4 or the sun went down behind the and the brake lines would off. Drove me nuts til I figured it out.

So why am I writing all the Cuz I want to establish that there are other forces at that can cause our bikes to act up. like the bike has a mind of own. Ok Robert, here’s I need from you to begin to try to this out:

1) What part of the world do you (what kinds of temperatures in area?)

2) Is the bike kept or outside?

3) By will not start, are you nothing happens when you the starter button, or is the starter the motor, but the motor won’t up?

Send me an update with to the three questions and I’ll see I can do to help solve the problem!!

QUESTION: I live in upstate New and it has been getting up into the hi 70s low 80s and into the 50s and hi 40s. The bike has kept outside since I had it, only about 2 months. I that it acts like the is ….

The bike will up if it is jumpstarted but other than will not start up at night.

Ok Robert. We have here an electrical problem. They can be to solve.

You will need to do any at night, as you can’t locate the if the problem isn’t happening (in the The first thing I would do is the battery and check the fluid in the cells (unless it is a maintenance type). You’ve only had the for two months and it is possible that the is borderline good. Also, sure the battery terminals are and corrosion free.

If all is good with the battery, and you say the will start when then I would suspect you may have a faulty starter Although temperature variances often affect these it is conceivable that it can happen. You can the solenoid by tacing the positive cable. it runs directly to the

Right next to where the cable attaches to the solenoid, is another fat cable that has the type attachment. That cable to the starter. The soleniod is actuated by the button and closes a contact allows current to flow from the battery to the starter. The time the bike won’t take an open ended and short those two fat wires

Make sure the wrench no other metal. When you those two terminals, the starter spin. There may be a few sparks and but you won’t be shocked. If the bike start by shorting the solenoid, you need a new one. Let me know if helped or not, cuz if not, are more things to check.

Keep me updated Robert!!
