New BMW X4 SUV unveiled

The new BMW X4 SUV gets coupe looks and grippy four-wheel drive

The new BMW X4 SUV has been revealed, just a day after the company debuted the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer and BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe at the Geneva Motor Show .

The BMW X4 is designed to offer the style of a coupe, but with some of the off-road ability of a conventional SUV. All versions get BMW’s grippy xDrive four-wheel drive system and the car sits directly below the BMW X6 in the range.

New BMW X4 details

As with the existing BMW X6, the bottom half of the new BMW X4’s body looks like a regular SUV – with big wheelarches and raised suspension – but above the doors the car takes the form of a coupe, with a sloping roofline.

Passengers sit lower than in the more conventional BMW X3 SUV. while the decent 500-litre boot extends to 1,400 litres with the 40:20:40 split-folding rear seats down. The interior also gets soft-touch plastics, as well as classy metal and glossy trim options.

The BMW X4’s driving experience should offer a mix between the upright driving position of the BMW X3 SUV and the fun handling of the BMW 3 Series saloon, while the four-wheel drive system gives the car added grip in slippery conditions.

New BMW X4 equipment

The BMW can also be had with loads of clever technology including BMW’s HUD (Head Up Display) that projects vital information (such as speed and sat-nav guidance) on to the windscreen, anti-dazzle headlights, and BMW’s City Braking System, which can stop the car if it detects an imminent collision at low speeds.

New BMW X4 engines

From launch, the car will be available with three diesel engines – the most basic of which is the 2.0-litre diesel in the BMW X4 20d. It produces 187bhp, gets from 0-62mph in 8 seconds, yet can still return 54.3mpg and emissions of 138g/km. The more powerful BMW X4 30d sits in the middle of the range and returns economy of 47.9mpg, emissions of 156g/km and will do 0-62mph in 5.8 seconds.

Top of the range is the BMW X4 35d, which uses a more powerful 308bhp version of the 3.0-litre engine as a 30d. It gets from 0-62mph in just 5.2 seconds, tops out at 153mph, yet can return 47.1mpg and emissions of 157g/km.

New BMW X4 price

The BMW X4 is expected to arrive in showrooms on 12 July and will be priced from £36,590 for the basic BMW X4 20d SE. Mid-spec BMW X4 xDrive 30d xLine models cost from £44,890, while top-of-the-range BMW X4 xDrive 35d M Sport models start at £48,990.
