HONDA ST1300 review By Frankl – Senior Editor

Falk – Motorcycle Evaluator

I had the of taking a brand new Honda up the Coast Highway on one of those weekends that seem so in the movies but rarer on most I get enough time to ride. I it’s just because we had a rather wet spring here in LA. I always considered myself a bike kind of guy maybe it is a thing, you know the classic Top Gun “I feel the need for speed”.

But the ripe old age of 33 now I feel the need for more than speed days. I can’t carry any on my sport bike and the lady along was having nothing of small piece of plastic in vinyl on my speed machine. A trip to the Rock store she can but a 500 mile rounder was out of the question!

So the and handsome Nicholas “please let me cool factory test again” Frankl traded me his new ‘03 ST1300, with big seats and of storage space. I always at bikes like this as or slow. You owe it to yourself to ride Honda, I was shocked.

It was so much fun, like from the supermarket 25 cent horsy rides to a mechanical

It was a little intimidating at first in the command center, all those and dash space. When you hop on you feel like you should out “initiate the launch sequence”. I just staring at the controls; the temp gauge always my eye, why don’t all bikes this?

After setting the to its lowest “in town” position I was This motor was smooth and me, the girl and full saddlebags butter.

I guess what me the most about the ST was how something so roomy, quiet and with so storage space could so sporty. This thing has a motor, solid handling and at feels like a stripped sport tourer, more a VFR, not a full blown, bag, got time to ride to road warrior. It turns you hope it will every no worrying about that sweeper ahead just on the gas and it just goes.

I was able, with some to adjust the rear preload on the go and that was really fun. why don’t all bikes have

The integrated bags are a real I found them very to get open and on/off. They fit a full-face helmet on both The dash has a couple of really deep, storage compartments. The one on the locks, so that’s where the went which was very

It also doubles as a food so be careful what you put in there. I they offer a rear for the passenger, which would be as I could tell after mine got tired of holding on to me or the grab rails.

The motor delivered even at prolonged digit speeds. There is a around 4500 rpm under in too high a gear that it some sad almost industrial sounds but it never hesitated and the was flawless. I averaged about which I thought impressive the weight.

It was just as happy being in town up and down the twisty Canyon as it was just putting mile after mile, responsive and always with “it’s a Honda don’t about it” feeling.

To me the coolest was the electric windshield. I found playing with it all the time. In the position you get a normal healthy blast that kept you and refreshed and when it gets you just hit the button and all is better

At 80 mph on the highway I could ride my face shield open no windblast or fear of catching in my eye, a great bonus on a day when you get that claustrophobic in your helmet.

After 400 or so I felt confident enough to down sport bikes. It feels planted and gives you that you never feel on made in Milwaukee. If the guys who for the black and orange (and I mean KTM) could trying to fit in with the unshaven and just try one these I am convinced would never go back. you give up a lot of soul and I am a big fan of soul but bike hands you speed and in a totally effortless package.

A cruise control would be and so would seat and grip but otherwise this thing Buy it, put gas in it, change the oil if you have time and see the In my opinion there is no more or accessible mount on the market the ST.

Honda should figure out a way to a rental operation around bike. I don’t need much bike every day but I travel I would rent it times a year and be able to that rush of power, of ABS, convenience and comfort made this trip one I always remember. And the ladies I am a real romantic hero!

Here’s a tip Honda. Set up a test stand about 10 miles Sturgis during bike keep a pile of full helmets with tinted and an assortment of somewhat large suits and let them try these With the suits and tinted they will be anonymous and of their friends will it’s them.

If you put little in the helmets I bet the smiles would you. If you really want to them away let them a Valkyrie or VTX 1800. I bet really men would be crying after a on one of those…..

I with all of Andrew’s comments. The is excellent and that’s’ why most of the police force’s choose Space, handling, speed and riding dynamics.

The only is the power screen. It is well and very effective in almost scenario. However, if you like with the screen up, and also to be riding on twisty roads, it can create a visual problem as the is quite tightly curved its perimeter and this produces to the degree that one find looking around the screen to better positioning into and out of

I cannot think of a good except making a flatter – which would likely be wind efficient but would peripheral visibility. There, you my 2pence / cents worth!
