Sneak Peek: Loren Healy’s Ultra4 Unlimited Truck

Justin Banner posted on March 05, 2014 13:31

Loren’s wheels were the American Racing ATX Series AX756 Slab bead-lock wheels in 17×9.0. The barrels of the wheels are cast aluminum while the bead flanges are forged aluminum. As you can see from the picture, anything less substantial would have been destroyed.

Like many other types of off road racing, you can repair your vehicle if something happens while you’re out on the race course. However, your crew can not bring you parts so you have to carry spares. That can range from oils

To steering links

To steering pumps! When it comes to off road racing, you never give up and you fix what breaks or make it work without it.

You’ll notice that I didn’t mention the radiator at all in this story and now I’ll share why. It’s not because the CBR Race Class Radiator and its 2 SPAL fans aren’t any good. They are quite excellent actually and used quite extensively in Trophy Trucks and Pro-4 race vehicles.

Instead, it’s because the jack handle decided to let go when a rock hit it. That not only took out the right side fan but punctured a large hole in it with over 40 race miles to go.

It also did damage to the wiring under the radiator for the fans, fuel pumps, and rear lights. It was extensive enough that the rest of the wiring under the dash also caught fire (taking that air filter I mentioned earlier along with it). It did not faze his crew, they set to work repairing the wiring and stopping the leaks that the hole in the radiator made. That took pinching off tubes and dumping tons of stop leak into the radiator.

With their last gallon of water, Loren was off in limp mode but it appeared as if he might not be in the lead any longer.

By adding a truss across the top, stress from one side of the axle is spread to the other side and makes it more solid, if you’ll excuse the pun.

Anyway, thanks for the detailed photos of all the mysterious voodoo (like four-tube bypass dampers, I guess those are to make the suspension move easier over sudden bumps?) that makes off-road trucks work.

Also, is the 2.5 inches in diameter bump stop that hydraulic piston-looking thing?
