Tata Prima T1 Truck Racing Championship to kick off on March 23

Come March 22, 2014, Tata is all set to flag off the first ever truck racing championship under the ‘Tata Prima T1 Truck Racing Championship’ banner on the Buddh International Circuit. For the race, a short loop of the BIC will be used consisting of six corners that includes the main straight and skips the famous parabola.

As the name suggests, the Tata Prima T1 Truck Racing Championship consists of Tata Prima trucks that you see on the road, except that they have been race tuned for the championship and I must say, look even more appealing in their racing livery.

Tata conceived the Prima truck in 2008 with technical inputs from around the world that include inputs from Italy in regard to cab design, Europe and USA for engine development, gearbox expertise from Germany, Sweden for precision robotic weld line, chassis know-how from Mexico and sheet metal dies from Korea and Japan.

For the racing championship, the Prima has obviously undergone changes that include a roll cage, side and rear under run protection, steering wheel with quick release mechanism, racing harness, fire extinguisher, wider brakes with water jet cooling, reduction in ride height for better centre of gravity and race specification tubeless JK Tyres. Components such as the fuel tank and battery bracket have been relocated for better centre of gravity as well as safety, a roll cage and propeller shaft guard as well as battery cut off switch have been integrated as per FMSCI regulations. Weight has also been added to the rear of the truck for better weight distribution and traction.

The racing Tata Prima is the 4038.S model of the truck that packs in an eight cylinder 6.5 litre Cummins ISLe engine that develops 375PS of power @ 2,100 rpm and 1,550Nm of torque between 1,200 rpm and 1,400 rpm. Incidentally, these are the specifications for the road going Tata Prima in South Africa, the India spec Prima makes around 100PS less. The engine is mated to an Eaton nine-speed gearbox with a crawler gear.

The racing Prima is capable of reaching a top-speed of 110 km/h while the speedo indicated 115 km/h on the back straight of the Buddh International Circuit. The short loop of the BIC for the race is 2.1 kilometers long and laps are expected to hover around a time of 2 minutes and 10 seconds with an average speed of 60 km/h.

The first race of the Tata Prima T1 Truck Racing Championship will take place on March 23, 2014 on the Buddh International Circuit. At the fore front of the programme is Steve Horne who has won the British Truck Racing Championship twice and is an organizer for the British Truck Racing Championship. The race will consist of six teams and twelve trucks that will be raced by truck racing drivers from the British Truck Racing Championship and European Truck Racing Championship.
