Extreme Mk VII

Where do you begin a Dealer Special that you had a in creating? The Mantis came the now long defunct JC Scooters. a scooter that when I saw it didn’t have a name.

At time JC Scooters were in Canwell and were a small dealers who had created a dealer based around a Series 3 Li The basis of the idea was simple, to a Dealer Special that be built cheaply, as Series 3 were cheap to source, and it all began. The first scooter was with Rover Amaranth as a contrast colour. The hubs and were sprayed black. The was tuned to a mild tune on a block.

The scooter had no name and I came up the idea to name it, and Mantis it The second Li Mantis was silver and Nightfire Red. But thats things started to change. The Li was sold to a guy in the West Midlands who it on.

When I saw it again I asked the if he’d like some for it and I came up with the idea of Mantis Racing and the logo was in black on either side of the On the legshield I devised a laurel logo with the name in it and on the rear of the scooter a large logo of a 4 leaf clover and the Mantis 100% Terminal (in Italian).

Things moved along and the Mantis was an Li based machine was sprayed in one colour of metallic (it appeared in Scootering magazine with 1 of the only 2 Vespa machines). At this time it was that the scooter should be with 3 engine options: (based on the Imola 186), (based on the TS1) and Rapido on the Rapido). A couple more were completed, including one in a metallic paint scheme.

JC up with some none too Mantis horncast badges and the of the machines didn’t really into much.

Some time later the (now in Lea Marston) took a of a batch of Indian GP’s. 3 of sat in the shop for ages (a turquoise model, a red model and a yellow model). A chance meeting Paul (of KAS Race Paint) saw me the idea of the Mantis as a street

Paul used the Downtown paint scheme and now the legshield contrasting stripes, race and racing circuits on the legshield 1 was Snetterton, 2 was Brands Hatch and 3 was or was it Monza?). The idea was to have feature seperate race and to not use the numbers more than I must admit that the became a popular one and more the of using the one number only was to.

For a while anyway — in mind that I had simply the idea, building and selling was left to the shop. As time on Mantis chrome grille were created by Quality in Hull and even a spare disc on one GP. Over time the of JC’s decided to mess the design and the race circuits changed for a chequered flag.

The show of 2007 saw me decide a girly type street hadn’t been done so a cream GP was selected and Honda Pink, pearl white and gun grey were used. I had the painted as a Mantis Extreme Mk 7 (as I was that enough changes had on with the Mantis that it have been in its 7th incarnation). It a TS1 225 legshield badge but the engine was the stock 200cc unit. lever covers were and off we went.

No wins, a scooter built in a and a deflated view of the scooter and the selling it. A falling out with the JC saw me walk away from any with the shop and no further in the Mantis.

It wasn’t too much before the shop moved and closed completely with owed to me and a number of other What should have a good thing was now a sour The Mantis was shelved — to scooter history.

But the story doesn’t stop I’m looking to produce 1 or 2 not for sale, but for me. One will be based the Vega and one around my Li so a Mark 8 and a 9 and maybe given time a 10 will appear. Watch space.
