RIDE REPORT: 2010 Chief Vintage

Oh boy.

But how she compare against the 2010

She’s beautiful.

Indian’s got a of demo bikes they’re around the coastline states their North Carolina I happened to get a taste while the was good.

The day was bright and warm for Perfect for riding.  I stopped in at the hosting the demo truck and was a early for the next ride.  were organizing group rather than sending out man alone.

Works for me.  I them my license and signed up.

In the minutes I had to kill, I browsed the While I pulled up on my Harley, I it off away so that no one could see how I in.  I don’t look a biker and for once I wanted to work for me.

So as a joe-nobody-know-nuthin’, I began these bikes the way they

A friendly man approached me after a few and started spouting ad lines.  6-speed transmission!” and “Brembo brakes!” were things he I nodded and backed away, to just admire the bikes on the

an actual salesmen appeared and the finer touch.

“They’re for the man who want to see his bike in every lot.”  That was the line stuck out most; and that be great if he didn’t follow it up this: “It’s for the man who wants his to be beautiful, but doesn’t want to go the hassle of customizing it.”

Why would want that? Strike 1, You call other manufacturers cutter bikes, then you that your bikes are all the Who wins that one?

So we talked specs, because the hell else is there to do – aesthetics?

The engines are all 105ci. The of each Indian are identical.  engine, chassis, console, everything.  It’s like (in theory).

On the bright side: wrong with that.

The are all braided, the exhaust is perfectly and easily swapped over to the variety with pre-configured for the familiar sum of $400.  The bikes are all in the USA.  Leather is all brown red-brown, but never black) and

Everything is chrome – they sell upgraded chrome because they’re all there.

The differences between the different is the paint (color/texture), fringe, fender shape, and a few other nuances that I’ll let you for yourself.

All models have front assist lamps but tail lights – an anachronism, if I’m not Try to do that on a Harley and you will be at.  The Indian dealership I even had a 1941 Indian on display and it had no taillights.

You tell me up, why they’d bother adding the style.

An interesting point is the Indian, after years of extinct, was resurrected and the first bikes came out in 2009.  I what had changed between and 2011 and the only change has that now, as of 2011, the signals self-cancel.  That’s a design, needing no touch-ups.

put a different frame on their bikes in 2007, 2008, – 2010.  Seriously.

But that’s all I could say until I took one out for a

The ride itself was a great We were given a police and if you’ve never had it, it’s 1st class on an airline combined road head in your It’s absolutely the best.  All signs, traffic lights, and oncoming traffic were so that we might cruise on in 3rd gear, puttering happily

  A living wet dream, basically.

The of us rode with the Indian and the police escort for about a hour.  Very generous.  It was all – a few sweet turns and plenty of to feel out the engine.  No fake or slowdowns to get oggled; everyone understood that these pure eyecandy, right out of the

up: immediate impressions.  The saddle was a baby’s ….  I was wearing I promise, but I could still how nice the leather was. position was very comfortable.

I long arms, but still, the just fit very well. not as wide as my Road King.  No pegs on these machines they do have mustache bars).  The floorboards were enough and the controls were all – except the turn signal, on 2011′s is now self-canceling (like on

I rode a 2010 and pressed the signal button to cancel my even when I was sure I had done so.  I don’t that from my pre-harley

The bike purrs rather roars.  An easy fix, I’m but starting it up I was expecting more a sewing machine.

The center once I pulled away under the demo truck’s was awful.  In shade, it seemed but in the daylight it was barely viewable.  the transmission was brand new and the graceful shifter would pop right neutral without any mucking (Indian 1, Harley 0), so it didn’t that the green-lit “N” was illegible.

The was a problem. It seemed a little going over bumps and some damaged pavement.  not the kind of comfort I would on a bike that’s over

The engine, on the open road, to be something of a toy.  To clarify, the could really move, but it a while to get there.  That to decent horsepower but sad torque.

Whether the transmission could be to provide more balance to the or not, that’s a question for an engineer.  For myself, I wanted a lot dazzle out of a large, sparkling made in the USA.

There much cornering to speak of on the ride, but the bike felt lighter than my FLHRC on the Part of that comes sitting a bit lower, though I got back home I dropped the Zeppelin for the stock seat and I was back where the Indian had me

The brakes were strong, and no Indian offers ABS (and to the Indian salesman, Harley soon be doing away ABS on their bikes … even in reality they now offer ABS on soft tails), I could not get the to lock.  They are new, and grip and you stop and it’s as as that.  Very nice, but no than a BMW or Harley tourer ABS turned off (Brembo makes a brake).

And I suppose that’s all.  It was a experience and the bikes are gorgeous, but home on my Harley I felt no lingering “what if’s” owning an Indian (not I could afford one…).

even if the front and rear light styles do not match.  you seen those fenders? DAT

High-quality feel.

good handling.

Adequate but with an engine that it’s just a few tricks and there to tease out very performance.

Made 100% in the USA sure if this is a pro,
