US 6 – The Grand Army Of The Republic

US 6 cuts across the Northern of Pennsylvania, offering 290 miles scenic riding for the route.  The road is in great and traffic is generally light – in the mid-section.  There are plenty of spaces for passing when Throughout the entire route, US many gentle curves . a few sweepers and some modest changes .  It’s an easy to navigate – no hairpin turns or – just miles of great and enough curves and hills to you interested .

As you might expect – route is a favorite of motorcycle enthusiasts from all over.  of the picturesque small towns the route are very   ‘motorcycle . Traveling through the area – it is that there is a degree of  “ old wealth in the region.

  The lumber fulled an economic boom in 1870s early 1900s and the  region was in an economic explosion created some of the wealthiest in the country.  This is evident as you through the small towns of and Smethport in particular.  This boom explains the many Victorian homes that US 6 as you travel through these

  Along the way there are also several that are worth visiting, as the Lumber Museum and the Pennsylvania Canyon .  For this blog – I focus on the mid section from to Sheffield.  When I am in this I usually utilize the town of  as my basecamp .

Wellsboro . like of the towns along this is a picturesque town that was upon lumber industry wealth – it is a place with  tree-lined that are adorned with lamps . well kept homes and local shops .  is an inviting place and its hotels to motorcycle touring enthusiasts.   I’m a for old, historic hotels so I stay at the Penn-Wells Hotel I am traveling in the region.  Below are a few showing the street view of Wellsboro and one of its beautiful Victorian

Heading West from – I recommend a brief detour to to Creek Gorge. commonly to as the Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania. by approximately 165,000 acres of the State Forest, the Canyon south of Ansoniaalong US Route 6 and for approximately 47 miles.  The overlooks at the Harrison and ColtonPoint State offer the most spectacular – like the one below:

Back on US 6 – headed to Coudersport

between Galeton and Coudersport is the Lumber Museum .  The Museum and interprets the colorful heritage of the prosperous lumber era when pine and hemlock were the of the nation.  You can take a tour of the where a 1912 Shay-geared locomotive, Barnhart Log Loader, locomotive and restored CCC Cabin are on Experience the rugged lifestyle of the in a  re-created logging camp.

Coudersport is the county of Potter county.  Like of the small towns along US – an inviting and attractive place to with a rich and interesting all its own .  Couderport, like other in the area experienced an economic in the late 1800′s but much of the was destroyed in a fire in 1880 and was severely damaged by a flood in

Coudersport was the home of the now infamous Communications company, whose former corporate office building below) dominates the center of  Adelphia (the Greek for ‘brothers’) was founded in 1952 by Rigas and his brother Gus who their first cable for $300.  Fifty years the tiny town of Coudersport was to one of the largest Communication companies in the as it claimed over 5.5 million

the palacial Adelphia office is the Old Hickory . hotel and restaurant on North Street. It was built in 1880 Franklin W. Knox who was impressed similar house he saw in and decided to build one exactly it in Coudersport.   Subsequent owners  it  ’Old Hickory,’ in honor of Jackson . the celebrated military in the Battle of New Orleans who was later President.

  For several years, the Rigases to renovate the Old Hickory with a of operating it as a bed and breakfast, primarily for of Adelphia Communications Corp.  Any of that was dashed when plunged into Chapter 11 in 2002.  The building had fallen a state of disrepair by the time bought it.  He did some repair work, but in recent the weather, pigeons and other elements have taken a toll.

Here is an interesting about Coudersport for you – Eliot moved to Coudersport . PA, in July of – which is where he stayed he died at age 54.  Ness was a partner in a company that had from Cleveland, OH to Coudersport, PA to cut and be closer to investors.  Ness and Fraley worked on the book “ The ” in what is now the restaurant area of the Hotel on Main Street in Coudersport.

   Bult in 1891, The Hotel is still in operation and its another Hotel that I have – if you like to get inside the ‘way machine’ then you will enjoy a stay at the Crittenden.  Its a place that its well and everything works – its just old. To my knowledge, the hotel not have a website so reservations be made by phone.

The train has been restored and is the site of the Offices.  It also contains the offices.  This building is on Maple and West Street.

Ok – to the road and onward to Smethport !

 is the county seat of McKean and it is a real hidden gem of town is very motorcycle rider .  As a result of vast generated by various aspects of the industry during the economic of the late 1800′s, Smethport was with numerous exquisite — most of which are impeccably maintained. The Smethport District is one of the community’s paramount and is one of the best-maintained historic architectural in the region.
