1965 AJS Model 18

Traditional singles tend to be solid, workaday machines. Paul AJS 500 is a little bit more lively.

dignity, and an ability to cope hard work without signs of stress — are some of the essential attributes of a Thus when AJS decided to their machines names in to terse designations it was fitting they should call the Model 18 the Statesman.’

That was how the Cycle described the AJS 500 single of the 1960s, a real old fashioned, construction British single around a design which back to the 1930s. The Model 18 had developed at a leisurely pace its lifespan, acquiring a duplex in 1960, a full-width hub with brakes in 1963 and so on — but the version was fitted with short-… scrambles engine, its cast-in pushrod tunnel, flywheels, and Norton oil pump, and forks.

The result is an unusually peppy — not a natural Statesman, it has to be — and the one you see here has a particular to fame.

‘This bike is alleged to be the one in one of Bob Currie’s books’, explains although it’s now fitted a different silencer, carb and wheel to those shown in the picture. However, it is fitted an anti-wet sumping valve and missing the oil tank level — just like the in the book.

Random AJS Stuff on

Bob Currie thought that should have been the Model 18 of all time’ but it didn’t get a chance to prove itself. The AJS and singles were phased out as AMC with Norton and all production to building twins, so the short-… 18 is the last of its line.

Some classic riders the more laid-back manner of the long-… singles. They that the short-… 500s that much quicker at the top end their predecessors (the bike was only 4mph than the 1949 machine!), and the newcomers were less suited to life as a sidecar tug for the man — but the final bikes do their fans. ‘The short-strokers are quick, agile, and rare’ reckons Frank (and he owns one, his has Norton badges on it!).

Owner Paul is very with his unusual Model 18, ‘It cost me Ј1700 in he says ‘but it’s not for It’s too good a ride!’
