1967 250

I guess it was meant to be. The thing I really needed was restoration project, but this one was out for me. What I am talking about is a 1967 Aermacchi Sprint 250 was disassembled, but complete, and stored in the of Paul Brodie’s shop.

She is now restored and running, and this is the of how it came to be.

I will start off Paul Brodie, because him I would never even considered starting this Paul used to own a company made mountain bike but now focuses most of his talents on motorcycles. He owns a company, Northwest Inc. which is to the brand.

He built a 350 race that he races in the vintage He owns several Aermacchi and a custom built off-road You could write a whole just on Paul’s bikes! Not is he an extremely gifted machinist, welder, and mechanic, but his enthusiasm for is infectious.

He also has a very equipped shop!

I, on the other have none of Paul’s but am a self-professed Italian Motorcycle I have restored several Motorcycles including a Moto LeMans I, Ducati Darmah SS, Morini 3 ½, and a Ducati 750 Sport. I can put together but I require the talents of like Paul for anything requires machining or fabricating.

I stumbled across the Sprint I was projects”. Having done a few I knew that this was not a bad to be in! But every once in awhile I get the I know that restorations countless hours hunting for days of degreasing, cleaning and and late evenings sorting out problems. Not to mention the constant of the bank account.

Still I jumped in with enthusiasm! Paul had a good of spare parts and was there to technical and moral support. I had never owned an Aermacchi

I bought the bike from my friend, and fellow Italian nut, Yves Gauthier. He across it at a local metal shop. The previous owner had the bike and carted the whole down to have various polished.

But for some reason he came to pay the bill and collect the Maybe the polishing bill was than he thought the bike was Anyway, Yves offered to buy the off the shop for what they had in polishing.

The entire collection of was brought over to Paul’s the intent of “some day” the bike.

Around the same Paul was building his race and had found a source in England could provide race body parts. Paul a set for himself and a set for the Sprint. This front fender, tank, and section. All in racing red gel coat.

To with originality, the Sprint was to look like a race All they had to do was get to it. Before you knew it, two had passed and the Sprint had not been

One day I was rummaging around in Paul’s and inquired as to the collection of boxes in the “Oh that,” explained Paul, “is a 250 … Sprint that to Yves.” Paul commented someone should buy the bike Yves because it was doubtful he ever get around to restoring it. I am “between projects” it catches my I rummage through the boxes and see all the polished parts.

I start out parts and discover that it is complete. When I do find a part, Paul is quick to in with “I can fix that.” I start to get Paul and I look at pictures and possibilities.

Paul says we can the bike look like I want. I don’t like the handlebars. “No problem,” says “I will make you clip-ons.” and foot pegs look “No problem,” Paul remarks “I will make you rear-sets.” A replica Aermacchi starts to shape in my mind.

By now I am really and at the point of no return. On December 4, I make a deal to buy the bike Yves. At first he is reluctant, but that he probably will get around to doing the restoration

Besides, he already owns a original Aermacchi 250 factory

As fate would have it, at the time I am starting the Sprint I make a career change and to take some time No use in finding a job when I have a time restoration project on my

Paul puts me in touch Moto Italia, a California business that specializes in If I needed a part that didn’t have, they had it. I soon got to be on a first name with Leslie from Italia.

The first thing I to change are the stock chrome So, the search is on for a pair of 18 inch These puppies are scarce, but much searching on the Internet, I a pair at Road Race in

They will only me the complete wheels but I go for it and later the hubs and spokes on Ebay. The are in great shape, and they go in for polishing. I get original spokes and from Paul and lace up to the stock hubs which already polished. The spokes are cad and the brass nipples are polished. I get the shoes relined with racing material.

Paul the hubs and axles for that look. He also installs new mounts a pair of tires and the are done.

Paul has a look at the for the first time and I am thinking is something I should have before I bought the bike! I my breath while Paul and prodded. He thinks the engine is so I send the heads off to get the valves and reground and the barrel honed. I spend an entire afternoon and cleaning the engine.

Things that take or skill are Paul’s domain, else I do.

I then run into my major hurdle. I can’t 250 short … piston I call everywhere and check the net but no success. But by chance I talk to Richardson, a friend of mine who a Moto Guzzi dealership in and he knows of someone who can make me a set of

I give Dave the piston and two later he sends it back to me, with rings. I order a new set of and the motor is complete.

Meanwhile, goes to work on the frame. He major modifications to fit the new tank, section, fenders, and rearsets. he is at it he strengthens areas he knows are to cracking. The amount of work goes into the frame is

Paul has to make major to make everything fit. it is one thing, figuring out how is another. It skill and imagination.

Not only can do this kind of work, but the is incredible!

To fit the fender Paul off the original mounting lugs the fork sliders and fabricates a new I then polish the sliders. I that I want to paint the the same colour as the body

Paul does the painting for me.

I like the stock instruments or the way mount to the bike. I order a new speedo that mounts a new headlight bucket that fabricates. He also makes a bracket to mount a large tach.

I understand that race bikes came a Smiths tach. Paul the headlight bucket and taillight gloss black.

We decided to the beautifully polished original clamp and use a set of clubman style off of a British bike. I had Paul on the stock lever mounts were rechromed. Every piece on the bike has either rechromed, cad plated, or polished.

All were replaced with

Being reasonably good at I rewired the bike myself mainly stock 6 volt I ordered a set of tank decals and applies them before the body work with coat. I rebuild the stock and assemble the rest of the bike.

In a little over 2 months the is ready to be fired up!

Of course it start, but I soon discover we have the timing out by 180 degrees. that is fixed it fires up! I do a few fast runs up and down the in front of Paul’s place and the timing.

It looks stunning and runs but is way too quiet with the stock

Paul had a muffler from a bike that bolted on, looked good, and sounded better. It is currently in for rechroming. The never came with a stand so Paul built me

It is on the bike but needs to be painted.

when I thought I was finished this particular project finds something that I have to have. It’s a brake backing plate twin leading shoes will fit onto my existing Of course I have to get the shoes the backing plate polished, and the parts cad plated.

This is not to be the end of the project yet because Paul has a 350 head that he thinks bolt right onto my 250 Then he says I should a larger carb to extract real power. I think for now I just go for a ride, after all I never owned an Aermacchi
