2011 ATK 700 Cruiser First

Watch the ATK cruiser as we it for a sweet ride the back roads. Check it out in our ATK 700 Cruiser Video .

Over the I have had the opportunity to test and a number of bikes produced by manufacturer ATK. Owner White (no relation) and I talk about riding, racing and the in general. Recently he invited me to spend a few days riding southern Utah to see the fall and put some miles on the bike will spearhead his new venture the street bike market the ATK 700 (Read more about in Can ATK Cruisers Help Harley-Davidson? ).

If you followed any of my adventures here at you might think that a cruiser motorcycle is a little off my beat. In a way it is, but there is just about a cruiser that to the heart of so many riders. The is a uniquely American creation.

I look back to the pictures of my a Harley dealer, riding in the and ‘40s, the bikes from period were all styled that distinctive long and low

For as homegrown as that all seems, if not for the of the Japanese manufacturers, our two-wheeled might look very today. While the metric of the ‘80s were not always the bikes, they were durable and plentiful. The huge of these models brought to a much larger audience of new

Ultimately it would be those riders that would bring about the strong of Milwaukee in the 1990s as they to move up from their bikes. The Motor Company at one time was on the edge of extinction soar once again. So as I myself riding a cruiser again, I cannot help but be by how much it is part of our collective and how natural it feels to be on the road on a motorcycle, regardless of its origin.

The ATK 700 is manufactured in Korea by ST Motors and plans call for assembly of models at ATK’s Utah It is built around a 687cc V-Twin engine. The liquid-cooled, mill has a mildly aggressive compression ratio.

The 90 degree angle is inherently smooth and the overall height of the engine and low.

The ATK 700 sources a 687cc V-Twin with a 90 cylinder angle for a smooth and ride.

The DOHC V-Twin is the same as that used 650cc sportbikes, so it always a little racy. Both the and rev characteristics are impressive for a bike in class. Claimed performance are a respectable 62 horsepower and 47 lb-ft of at 8000 rpm.

Power is through the five-speed transmission to a belt final drive. The ratios are wide spread, but is plenty of grunt to keep the delivery smooth. The belt features an automatic tension therefore it is practically maintenance

The transmission shifts smoothly, there was a little free in the shift linkage that I annoying.

Helping contribute to the wide look are the machined aluminum The front rides on a 120 series tire and the rear a 170/80/15. The themselves are a nice blend of surfaces contrasted by painted insets. The single 300mm front disc brake a four-piston caliper. Out back is a disc with a two-piston

Braking power is strong, but require a healthy amount of effort.

Overall the bike the cruiser style through fenders, exhaust and tank. Additionally, the mounted instrument panel is designed well and has great at night.

Our road trip just outside St. George, As the bikes rolled up, my first was how much the ATK has a complete cruiser package.

All of the styling details are in with each other. The flare of the fenders, exhaust and all flow nicely. The bike very low with a 27-inch height.

The forward controls, back bars and tank gauges all contribute to the cruiser’s

I was a little concerned about my level on such a low bike. As it out the forward controls stretch my out suitably well and the bars are an reach. The foot controls are and can be moved rearward to accommodate riders.

Once I was instructed to insert the key on the right side of the (I told you I’m not a cruiser the 700 fired right to life. The note has a nice muted just enough to instill a character. As I had literally jumped off a bike and on to the cruiser, it took me a few to get my bearings.

Once settled I quickly accustomed to the new surroundings and set out to enjoy the ahead.

Easing my way through quickly brought up two of the very few of the ATK. Over uneven the suspension action leaves a bit to be Both ends are harsh and it horses around.

Once out of and at speeds over 25 mph, issue disappeared and the overall quality on the highway was very

The other issue is that the injection is abrupt at low speeds. In situations it takes a gentle to keep the power delivery Again, once on the road the response is excellent.

Out on the open the ATK is torquey and runs smoothly gear thanks to its fuel

We head south out of Hurricane, working our way towards Kanab. As the opens up I get a chance to really on the ride quality. My initial is just how solid the torque are.

For the most part riding is a matter of just the 700 in high gear and leaving it It will pull from low smoothly and with some acting like a much mill.

This brings view the other nice of the fuel injection. The engine clean and strong through the rev range. It never has that of being plugged up.

On the second morning of our ride we up to a strong layer of frost. One at the starter and the ATK fires to life and into idle with no

The tank mounted instrument works fairly well. The speedometer is paired with displays for trip meters and gauge. The cluster has a nice contrast and the illumination at night it easy to read without overly bright.

The digital are a little small to read at

The fuel gauge never to move and when it finally did I was that it must not be very Yet that evening when we the bike it took less three gallons. As our pace was leisurely through the national of southern Utah, we never a whole tank of fuel in one but I estimate the mileage at nearly 60

That should easily net a of over 200 miles-per-tank.

As the miles up I found that I was pleasantly by my time on the ATK. The seating is typical cruiser, putting of your body up against the The seat is well padded and as as I remembered not to slouch too much I was comfortable for extended riding

With a claimed 62 horsepower, the ATK delivered slightly more expected and offered our contributor the to sit back and enjoy the cruiser experience.

The motor gives just a little than expected, both and torque. Of course we are not talking setting any performance records but with a claimed 62 horses it up well against the competition in the

As for the chassis, other than the suspension action at low speeds, the is always spot on. It will a spirited romp through the with ease. There are no parts to hit the ground and the suspension the bike up well under and cornering.

The chassis turns the corner with little and tracks well, though there is a tendency to stand up under With minimal effort and riding the 700 will hustle pretty good.

For the open the nearly 66-inch wheel gives a solid road Blasts from oncoming don’t upset the bike. The Shinko tires are reasonably to the task. The low seat height make the 700 act lighter than its 530-pound curb weight.

The overall balance makes it to manage at low speeds.

I give it marks for overall fit and feel. The LED integrates nicely and the rear head lamp works Some of the trim parts are over plastic design but few of can be recognized beyond ten feet. The of the forward control shifter is a sloppy.

It was one of the few things that I gave the bike a cheap

Our test bike is a preproduction as some of the final styling have yet to be decided, particularly the choices and final graphics. I that wild over the and brown color scheme of unit. Frank was in agreement me, so expect some changes in the versions.

Although it’s labeled as an entry-level many will find the ATK 700 meets or exceeds that

One of the things I enjoyed most my time with the ATK 700 was that it put me in “cruiser” mode. I spent time enjoying the ride being concerned about the I also received more up and positive comments from than I have seen in the year.

No one asked what it was or it came from, they liked it. I am not sure that is a whole lot more one could ask of the experience than that.

is being billed as an entry bike. I’m not sure everyone will get on board that concept. It seems a pretty complete package and riders may find this is all the they desire.
