A legend revisited: Zündapp/ Fury

Zundapp Fury

Current generation motorcyclists not recognize this, but the veterans us definitely will. Meet the Fury made sold in by Enfield India Ltd. as the Fury before Enfield became Royal Enfield. crotch rocket was manufactured 1985 to 1992 in a plant by Enfield at Ranipet near in collaboration with Zündapp.

plant also manufactured 2 licensed Zündapp products- a 50 cc called the Silver Plus a 50 cc 3 motorcycle known as the Explorer.

The Fury was based on the Zündapp KS 175 and with a rubber-mounted single 163 cc 2 … engine putting out 18 Bhp in form. However, considering fuel conditions it was detuned to Bhp for India. The India spec was a trendsetter but lost out on the originally liquid cooling system and had to do with air cooling. This was to keep costs under and also to keep things

Power was transmitted to the real via a 5 speed transmission via chain This transmission however was the Achilles heel- it was unreliable and to slip of out gear. Since it was on a pull-cotter system, a relatively and uncommon system, the gearbox to be handled with kid gloves.

Any rough usage and banging the gears would result in you out of gear.

Available in 3 variants- GP, DW DX the came equipped with the features, all of which were leading at the time.

1.  18 inch aluminum alloy

2. Front disc brake by

3. Fairing

4. Electronic Ignition

5. Facility.

6. Induction Resonator

7. Tachometer which also to be digitally governed

The Fury was a proven performer, having run around much bigger participating in th 1997 Iron Rally in the USA. While it was the of the lot being the smallest capacity and the only 2 … motorcycle in the rally, it finished well of the bigger capacity bikes. And in mind this bike was a manufactured in 1973 owned/piloted by Hildebrandt from Germany.

Enfield India put up a very marketing campaign highlighting the 5 box with slogans like gears for the city and one for the highway”.

since Enfield was unable to a reliable service network and of reliable affordable spares, the was unable to sustain itself in the and eventually production stopped. did gamely try to iron out the major issues and also made changes and called it the Fury GP but it was fighting a losing game and and production eventually tanked.

While we mourn the demise of legendary icon, the spirit lives on with a number of owners, enthusiasts specialists themselves to sourcing restoring bikes back to their glory.
