Blog 63: The Pickup Part 3. Or: All Things Come to an End, so why do bad go on forever?

So Part 1 was about to San Francisco. Part 2 was about in San Francisco. And this, Part 3 . is getting the bike back

Needless to say it should be the most The ADVENTURE is always about the The discovery. The conquest.

The Hobbit: and Back …was about the “there”. Back was a few throw pages at the end. The Legend of always has Link winning the and then “game over”.

Ganondorf is slain you don’t see at home heating up a pot pie and catching up on episodes of Breaking Bad on his DVR. maybe I should come up less geeky references. All my cred is gone. Ok.

I never had any to with.

But back on topic. home. Personally I hate a return trip that is the same as the one going out. To me seems, and is, redundant. So for the trip I decided to veer north at and stop at a small town Baker, California.

Home of the World’s Tallest This path would me closer to Death Valley and I a night in Baker could be It was not.

Though the next ended up being much better than the night I

Ah…were shall I start? So it out that there is only one in Baker still open. And motel is currently for sale and by people who kinda just care . Likely they are poorly paid caretakers in the of a far distant owner. The room had a odor I’ve never before and was heated by an old, heater.

When I turned it it just didn’t seem I was fairly sure it was putting out of carbon monoxide and that I surely perish. I tried a downloaded episode of Shameless on my and the image seems to shift and and blur just a bit.

It have been my tired a bad download or a number of things–poor lighting in the room or the beginnings of my expected psychotic break…but I to focus on one thing: The beginnings of Monoxide ….

I didn’t really want to in Baker. I kinda didn’t to stay overnight or even be in for longer than a quick up of the pickup’s gas tank and go. But … in was pretty far down on my list of to do on a weekend…or weekday. Especially now I had just gotten the Plus

Oh, and my lovely family…I would them too. So I turned off the and decided not to use it. I also decided I was to sleep in my clothes on top of the bed.

it was that kind of room.

the temperatures dipped into the and I found myself freezing the use of heater or covers. So I decided to the bathroom window for ventilation and the heater back on. Not only on, but on to battle the cold cold air. I figured the outside air dilute the carbon monoxide to keep me alive.

Possibly some brain damage, but it wouldn’t be worse than any one of a nights I had in college.

Which is how it to be that; on top of the bed sheets, fully with the heater pumping hot air at me and the window allowing freezing air I slept. Mostly I slept of the comforting hum of the Brammo Enertia charging in the room with me. A) I sleeping to that sound. B) always nice to get an overnight And C) I didn’t trust the bike outside.

Heck, I wasn’t too sure I it in the room with me. Cheap, old door locks with a key than the one I used as a kid when I was a kid…in the freaking 60′s. So door was little protection. and…

THIN WALLS. I hear the people next talking very clearly. Not enough to hear exactly they were saying, but

And the conversation, the ebb and flow, the cadence and all suggested a friendly and flirtatious I was very very VERY that the talking was going to “something else”. And I really want to be in that room, dressed and laying on top of the bed sheets, freezing and overheating, having the monoxide slowing killing me, also listening to two strangers G o at IT . It have been toooooo

Luckily the room fell and the people either left (if were smarter than fell quickly to sleep or good WASPs and did the nasty in silence.

Bike in room…… in the wall

So, somewhat surprisingly, I the night. And it was a rather quick from that room as I was dressed :). I had looked at the shower and to skip it. My wife would be A) I always take a shower in the

It is what wakes me up. And B) I’ve in some fairly sketchy For me to forgo a wake up shower that the bathroom was pretty And it was.

So I got up and packed up the car with except the Plus. I was determined to get a ride in before leaving. all I picked Baker so I could ride into Death

And to see the World’s Tallest Thermometer doesn’t seem to be working. they just turn it off in the Or maybe, like almost else in Baker, it has been neglected and finally succumbed to apathy, inertia. A Ghost for a Ghost Town.

An abandoned for future generations to puzzle

It was a pretty morning. Pretty and I thought of Death Valley and it would be warmer, even in mid My ride was at 32 degrees exactly. And I had my gloves. Grrrrrrr.

The wrong is a reoccurring theme for me. Heck, it be my autobiography title. The Wrong and other mishaps and missteps .

But I on.

World’s Tallest Thermometer. Not The building behind it was empty

It seems the Thermometer is owned by Bob Big also was closed.

YOU”RE really wish you weren’t)

So the stop, before I realized how it was, was to be a nice ride Death Valley Highway. I go far. 8 am, 32 degrees, wrong 60 mph road, bad night of sleep and monoxide … all worked me. The cold got to my hands pretty

But I rode a few miles north on Valley Highway and took a few

When I first looked at and the Death Valley Highway I wanted to go to Shoshone. A) I live on Rd. B) Shoshone is the home to Death High School.

And I really wanted a photo of the in front of Death Valley School. The name alone it perfect for an old drive in movie line. But 56 miles each way was too much for a photo op that have been crappy.

So part got scrapped.

Death off-road Panorama.

As I said, it was a day. Now if only it had been 20 warmer.

Shoshone sign

So I did about 10 miles round on Death Valley Highway. in the Fall I’ll go back and do a trip. But the cold and lack of forced me back into to load up the bike and finish the home.
