Outback of Beyond Adventures

the Gap-The Taking of the Windmill

And the quest for romantic adventure continues! Almost years after our successful expedition through the Darien Gap and six after the completion of our Roads End to End expedition we were on the road actually that’s off-the-road.

The Gap of Panama and Colombia is a most opponent, a motorist’s nightmare or an off-road adventurer’s dream. The Darien Gap is over 125 miles of jungles, tortuous rivers, low but mountains, and a vast marshy that separates Panama South America. The Pan-American stretches some 17,000 from Alaska to Argentina, and is yet to be across the Darien Gap.

We 49 arduous days of near ending romantic high to become the first to cross the Darien Gap of Panama and Colombia all on land — via motorcycle, the two-wheel drive American Rokon Trail-Breaker.

The Rokon Trail-Breaker, has drive, an automatic torque type clutch, weighs 185 pounds, can carry nine of fuel (or water) in the hollow wheels, and is the perfect rough off-road machine. Having wheels with power more traction on the rough terrain in the Darien Gap.

Having an automatic torque meant that the engine assist while climbing the hills or over the countless trees of the Darien Gap without the of burning out a clutch. Weighing 185 pounds meant two men could the motorcycle over obstacles, necessary. Being able to an extra nine gallons of was very convenient, gasoline is a rare commodity in the Darien

Yes, the Rokon Trail-Breaker is the goes anywhere off-road, terrain motorcycle.

Since the Trail-Breaker is not a street-legal motorcycle, we had to it and all of our supplies to the beginning of the Darien We spent fifty-eight hours on a coastal boat (we were the journey would only 12 hours!), with the dubious of being sunk on three occasions, just to reach the end of the Highway in Central America, Republic of Panama.

Finally on 11, 1995 our Rokon Trail-Breaker began, Through the Gap — The of the Windmill. We had christened our Rokon Rozinante . after Don Quixote’s horse — thus the of the windmill.

Loren was the only one who rode I walked, along with our hired guide/cook and workers. A and relatively clean trail through the dense jungle by pieces of equipment made the couple of days travel easy. That all changed after we left the Choco of Lepe. We entered an area by other expeditioner’s as the Devil’s An area of only about 13 miles, but many of those seem to be near vertical!

jungle covered mountains, water holes, steep ravines, hungry insects, and the vaguest resemblance of a trail our home for three days of travel. Rozinante was in her element! The performance on the steep grades was and its ability to climb over trees was incredible.

Loren beyond a shadow of a doubt, the Rokon can and will climb than it is physically possible to before the Law of Gravity takes There were days Loren rode the Rokon and there were days the Rokon rode him.

On particular expedition we had the use of a hand-held positioning system, a Scout, by Navigation. Truly a wonderful of technology. We were possibly the to ever use a GPS in the mapping of a trail in the Gap.

It sure would be if we could now get an accurate map drawn of the using those coordinate

The Rokon expedition was one of heart-stoppers and life-long friendships. It was punctuated tears of fear and tears of One of those heart-stopping — of fear — moments was I was alone in our campsite one evening. The was raided by about 15 highly and very angry Kuna

Rozinante was taken and chained to a in a thatched hut and held for a $500.00 We were rescued by heavily police the following afternoon.

of those heart-stopping moments when Rozinante suffered a mechanical failure that set the expedition’s time schedule ten days. As usual, hindsight is if we would have had a tube of glue Loren probably have fixed the problem on the in ten minutes. Unfortunately we did not have the so we struggled for ten days, instead of ten to make it all work!

This delay was due strictly to the of the area and the long struggle to get out back) to where we could get the replacement part. Rainy was fast approaching and we were in the of the Atrato Swamp, not the place to be the rains come.

And speaking of heart-stopping, tears of fear we had a few more. Like coming to face with the notorious Guerrillas. However, in all fairness, did not push their position the point of no return and on a whole very polite, much so than some of the Kuna’s of We may have just been

Another heart-stopper was a potentially accident — Loren was and pinned by Rozinante . and lost, for a time, all movement in both of his

But every tear of fear, skip of the heart beat was it when we finally arrived at the back-water river town of Rio Colombia, on March 31, 1995. Rio Sucio there is a primitive that connects with the Highway in Colombia. We had, again, successfully crossed the Darien Gap, all on land!

We hope to receive another Book entry, this for being the first motorcycle to the notorious Gap, entirely on

As for heartfelt, life-long friendships were many! However, I only mention one in particular, Rivas, alias Cookie. was born in Colombia but has been in the village of Pucuro (Panama) for years, he is the only non-Kuna in the village. I can not possibly convey my on what a truly wonderful man he is. On the with the Jeep, Roads End to End . Cookie held the position as, you it — cook!

On this expedition Cookie held a of positions, Camp Boss, Cook and Trusted Friend. is a man who speaks no English, I speak improper Spanish at best, speaks even less, and I Cookie with my life, Cookie knows intuitively we are saying.

Truly a good and honorable

The obstacles by Mother Nature came to an end we arrived in Rio Sucio, however, the man obstacles were just Faced with almost government and shipping company it took us fifteen long, days to find a way to ship back to the United States. It was a trip, but then they are all some are just greater others!
