What on is that?

It’s the Can-Am RT, made by the excellently named Recreational Products. It’s a of three-wheeled, mutant trike lurks between ‘full-blown bike’ and ‘quad’. It’s fully customisable too, many of these being to the disabled.

There’s a charming about former Royal Commando Joe Townsend, who’s got a Spyder RS-S that special clips for his prosthetic

Who on earth is Bombardier Recreational

A Canadian company that its roots back some 70 and has a history of making excellent Top playthings. It pioneered the snowmobile creating the ‘Ski-Doo’ (it was apparently to be ‘Ski-Dog’, but a printing mishap otherwise) way back in the 1950s, and has built this Can-Am of bike-trike things, sailboats, and (small off-roaders). Seriously, into a BRP showroom and we defy you not to want to buy everything.

Tell me about this RT.

Of the three Can-Am Spyders the RT is the most comfort-orientated, suitable for trips across the country or in the hands of the mildly masochistic. For the RT gets a new Rotax 1330 ACE which uses three cylinders to produce 115bhp and ft of torque.

There’s a new six-speed too, featuring automatic and reverse situated on the left of the there’s a new set of SACHS shocks variable damping, and a new comfort too. Plus, the nose, if you can it that, has been redesigned.

Considering it weighs 459kg, engine is plenty peppy. do 0-60mph in a smidge over 4.5 and is limited to 125mph. We’re it’ll also run a quarter in just under 13 seconds.

it like to drive?

Weird. But weird. You don’t need a license, just a couple of of orientation to get used to the controls. you can literally jump on and ride

You twist the throttle with right hand just a bike, but there’s a brake just ahead of your foot, and a shift paddle on the handle. Twist, and it unleashes a of low-down power that, if a bike rookie, will you off down the road and into painful without warning.

Same goes for corners. The is immediate, and those unaccustomed to bikes will find the throttle input and steering correctly a bit of a puzzle at first. If your first time, you turn cautiously, realise its not turn more (too realise you’re slowing, the throttle and then fly around the at light speed.

And then something painful without

But once settled — and as we say it takes a couple of hours it’s easy to find a that suits, and the one big thing constant throughout: it’s really comfortable. Riding potholes, bumps, coarse surfaces, whatever — fazes the Spyder RT at all, and thanks to its new found damping.

It’s fast, sure, and engine does sound when you decide to make but the RT is actually more suited to pootling around town. it’s got built in sat nav, an connection, loads of storage and heated handgrips for you and your Get ready to become intimate whoever this is.

Saying the original caveat we had when we drove the Can-Am Spyder you get none of the benefits of a car and all the disadvantages of a It’s too wide to weave in traffic, and there’s no roof for it rains.

But it looks like such

It is fun. Lots of fun. as a PlayThing, the RT is enormously entertaining, you might tire of the constant it gets on the road.

In the summer, you easily put a few hundred miles your belt without though our test RT did weigh in at a staggering £27,000, which is a lot of for a trike.

Our advice would be to for the cheaper Spyder RS for £15k if you must have one: marginally quicker, the throttle is the brake pedal falls your foot easier, it cooler (get one in black and a Batbike) and the whole structure is for more oh-god-its-fast moments.
