Marc’s Italian Adventures

being some notes I posted to the WetLeather and Euro-Moto lists and to Usenet’s my 5 month work assignment at headquarters, in Ivrea, Italy is about 40 miles north of I tried (unsuccessfully) to buy a motorcycle there, so about halfway my stay I returned to the USA and shipped my Yamaha GTS1000A to Italy via air

Arrival in Ivrea, Italy

I’ve been living in for just over two weeks and am over the jet lag and some of the culture So this will be my first on the subject of motorcycles in Italy.

First of all, there are a lot of on the roads here. The small mopeds are mostly all Italian Malaguli, Gilera, etc. The are mostly GP replicas or Paris-Dakar and are are often Italian, but with a percentage of Hondas and Yamahas.

The big seems to come out after hours or on the weekends. And, surprised to say, it’s exclusively Japanese. A small of Ducati 888s, and 851s, and an Moto Guzzi, Morini, or Ducati model.

I’d about 50/50 sport and DP bikes.

Some of the better near here (approx NE of Turin) have quite M/C traffic, some of it going at a racers pace. For the most the fast guys (haven’t a woman rider yet) are high-buck color-coordinated leathers and On a nearby road which the side of an old glacial moraine going to be an uphill race Sunday.

Apparently they will the road to normal traffic and it be a closed course point-to-point in a National Championship series of races. I plan to spectate. at 11. -)

I haven’t decided which to buy for my own use in the 5 months that I will be Maybe a used Ducati that I can later ship for my girlfriend to ride. Used are available for quite reasonable (’83 SB4, 6K Km, $8,800) they are still fairly

It feels like a crime to buying a Japanese bike in the home of such wonderful builders.

Also, there’s the of theft, which is quite here. You almost never see an M/C here without being or chained to something.

Here’s a of the top 10 best selling models (by of units sold, not dollar from the first three of this year:

Honda VT600C

Cagiva (125cc)

Honda XRV750 Africa

Honda NX650 Dominator

Aprilia Extrema

Honda CN250

Yamaha XTZ660

Aermacchi Ala Verde Sport

The only additional manufacturers in the top 20 are Kawasaki and Ducati has only 2.9% of the by total dollar sales. In Harley Davidson has 1.5%, and (the Italian market has 32.6%.

Motorcycles in Italy

I have been watching the in Turin and Milan for the last of months. IпїЅve seen two and пїЅ83 and an пїЅ84 going for $8,500 or so. I also went and at two KB1пїЅs, which I believe the first models that made.

One was 100% original and complete for and the other had been raced and was worn looking and missing its but was only $3,200. IпїЅve seen one more KB1 being in a local shop, and it has revived my in the old racer I saw. The KB1 is very and very wide.

It also badly in town unless the is removed.

New prices in US Dollars:

GuzziпїЅs seem to be the popular large-displacement Italian here. They certainly the broadest range of models, quite a few which I didnпїЅt to list here.

Used Prices:

Just for comparison, hereпїЅs the locals have to pay for bikes are also popular in the USA:
