Trog Racing – Gideon Thomas – 67

Gideon’s full name is Gideon Aneurin Lee Thomas. You may have spotted a hint of Welsh in there, and you’d be right – there’s no doubt about who we support when the Six Nations rugby is on! But Gideon is also a native Londoner, and was born at St Thomas’s Hospital, overlooking the Houses of Parliament, in the closing days of 1997.

And that makes him 14 years old in the summer of 2012.

Gideon has what I like to call a strong personality. Some might see him as a daredevil, and a natural leader. The less biased might say he is troublesome and subversive, but I couldn’t possibly comment.

But he’s also a sportsman, and is keen to help those he competes against, many of whom have now become his friends. He knows that winning isn’t everything. (He’ll learn, because as we all know, winning is actually everything!)

Gideon was born into a house full of music and motorcycles. He’s been around bikes from the very beginning, and has always loved them. When there was something of a craze for minimotos in the mid 1990s his friends had bikes and were riding them in car-parks.

We agreed that he could have one.

But we also agreed that he would do his riding on a race track.

Gideon lined up for his first minimoto race at TRAQ in Mitcham, South London when he was 6. We raced chinese made CAGs, and it was fun. And cheap. When he started to get quick we progressed onto a B1 replica, and a Blata Elite.

And that was where we raced for fun for three or four years or so.

When Gideon was 9 we spread our wings a bit, and entered the championship at Angmering in Sussex. Gideon did well in the air and water-cooled classes, and added to our groaning mantlepiece of trophies. Finally, at the end of 2009 we entered the NPS round at Lydd in Kent, racing a newly acquired GRC RR 4.2.

This was our first taste of national competition!

This led to Gideon’s first full season of national racing with the FAB Racing British Championship in 2010. We warmed up with a week of racing in Spain at the Finnestrat track near Benidorm, riding a GRC RR 4.2 (air cooled), and a GRC RR Proddy (water cooled). And these are the bikes that we started the season on.

Gideon got off to a flying start, winning the first round of the 4.2 Junior B class, and maintaining his momentum through the series, taking another overall win at Lydd, and finishing a brilliant second in the championship! After a couple of rounds we abandoned the Proddy in favour of a Metrakit MiniGP 50, in preparation for a full campaign the following year.

For the 2011 season we finally waved good bye to the minimotos. We’ve had great fun with them, but it was time for some real motorcycle racing now! In 2011 Gideon is rode in two Metrakit classes – MiniGP50 and MiniGP70.

And for 2012, Gideon stepped up to the world of full sized motorcycles,  racing on the greatest circuits Britain has to offer, like Brands Hatch and Donington Park. On an Aprilia RS125 in the Thundersport Superteens Challenge! It was a fabulous season, which reached its peak in September at Cadwell Park where Gideon got his first race wins on a full sized bike, and where he was virtually unbeatable.

And now at 15, for 2013, Gideon has stepped up a gear, and is racing a fabulous Aprilia RRV450GP in the Aprilia Challenge  – the most successful one-make series in the world!
