ROUTINE MAINTENANCE AND SERVICING

INTRODUCTION

This Chapter is designed to help the home mechanic maintain his/her scooter for safety, economy, long life and peak performance.

Whenever you ride your scooter, and in some cases even when it is not in use, components wear and deteriorate. To counteract this process, every machine has a service schedule – relating to either a period time or mileage – which stipulates when checks and adjustments should be made.

The majority of service items are common to all scooters, but some are specific to certain machines. Use your Owner’s Handbook, together with the illustrations in Section 2, to identify the various components that require periodic attention.

Deciding where to start or plug into a service schedule depends on several factors. If the warranty period on your scooter has just expired, and if it has been maintained according to the warranty standards, you will want to pick up routine maintenance as it coincides with the next mileage or calendar interval.

If you have owned the machine for some time but have never performed any maintenance on it, then you may want to start at the nearest interval and include some additional procedures to ensure that nothing important is overlooked. If you have just had a major engine overhaul, then you will want to start the maintenance routine from the beginning as with a new machine. If you have a used scooter and have no knowledge of its history or maintenance record, it would be best to combine all the checks into one large initial service, and then settle into a regular routine schedule.

SPARK PLUG

WARNING: Access to the spark plug is extremely restricted on some scooters. Ensure the engine and exhaust system are cool before attempting to remove the spark plug.

CHECK AND ADJUST

Make sure your spark plug socket is the correct size before attempting to remove the plug – a suitable plug spanner is usually supplied in the scooter’s tool kit.

As required, remove the engine access panel or storage compartment to access the spark plug (see Chapter 8).

Pull off the spark plug cap, then ensure the spark plug spanner is located correctly over the plug and unscrew the plug from the cylinder head (see illustrations).

Inspect the plug electrodes for wear. Both the center and side electrode should have square edges and the side electrode should be of uniform thickness. Look for excessive deposits and evidence of a cracked or chipped insulator around the center electrode.

Compare your spark plug to the color spark plug reading chart at the end of this manual.
