First let’s address your terminology. These days, an enduro bike refers to a very specialized race bike, for enduro competitions. It may have rudimentary lighting, a single-beam headlight and a tail light, but no high-low beam, brake light or signals.

It is not street legal, although you can get them plated in some states.

From your question, it is clear you are asking about what we now call dual-sport bikes, particularly the big singles. I ride three of these, the KTM 640 Adventure, the Kawasaki KLR650, and the Suzuki DR650. They are all pretty decent on road, for singles, that is. I would tour on any of them. The KTM has excellent suspension and is brilliant at high speeds over rough ground.

It is also the fastest of the three, but maintenance is quite a bit more work on this bike, typical for KTMs. It is also too tall for me to take into tight woods.

The KLR is a go-anywhere mule. It needs a better seat and radiator protection, but once you have it crash-proofed it will take you a long way from civilization with its big gas tank. It’s a bit of a whale, but has room to pack a lot of luggage and camping gear.

The DR is quite a bit lighter than the KLR, and is the only one I will take into tight single-track, although it is still heavy for a dirt bike and will make you work. It is also quite nice on the highway and a blast in the twisties. The DR is the bike I pick for trips into Mexico, where the mountain roads are quite rough and difficult, and where I can pack light because hotels are so cheap.

The XR650L is good off-road, but not too pleasant on the highway. The XR650R is a brilliant desert bike, fast and powerful, but it lacks an electric starter (important for my crispy old knees) and is not street legal. It could be a lot of fun if you got it plated, but is not something you would ordinarily tour on (The guys I know who have tried that have not fared well) or enjoy for road trips.

Others you might consider are the Husqvarna 601 and the yamaha WR250R (yeah, it’s only a 250, but the fuel injected power plant makes it pretty decent on the highway).

Speed bumps are a non-issue for any of these bikes. They will all handle a lot more than that.
