Jerry Young’s 1990 KLR 650

Jerry Young can’t sit It’s taken me MONTHS to pin him long enough to talk him about his 1990 Kawasaki KLR 650. If not out riding a motorcycle, he’s out a mountain bike. If he’s not either of those he’s off somewhere.

A true adventurer at Jerry finally found some to talk to me about his KLR and a the amazing places it’s him.

What made you buy a Kawasaki KLR650?

In 1992 planning a Dual Sport through the Frank Church Area in Idaho. We rode Elk City, Idaho through then on up to Darby, Montana and there back to Challis, and Boise – mainly on dirt with little sections of The KLR comes with a 6.2 gallon stock, that’s the main I got it.

I hit reserve around 260 miles. got as high as 67 miles to the gallon but just putting, if I’m hard on the gas it can get as low as in the Average MPG is in the mid 50s.

I didn’t it when I bought it, but it also has a for running a long time; a dependable bike.

What you like about it?

It’s It’s a little awkward. not even close to an all out dirt I was in the Sawtooth Mountain Range on it some narrow rocky ran across a side hill caught my foot on a rock enough to pull my big toe out of the socket and the two toes next to it; my bike was off the downhill side of the trail. ( Note: Jerry does MX boots !) I was riding with that were on regular bikes.

This bike has limits – too wide and sits too low for that of riding.

How does this compare to others you’ve in the past?

This is the best all bike I’ve ever I rode it to Texas – on the – just to ride 60 miles of at Big Bend National Park ; turned around and rode We hit the mountain passes, around 14,000′ passes in one day.

It’s not a high performance it’s an endurance bike. why a lot of guys pick these ride through places South America – they run Mine has close to 81,000 on it.

What have you done to it?

nothing! Just some stuff. The clutch plates. The went out at 50,000. I bought it 3500 miles on it and the kid I bought it did some things.

He put an oversized brake rotor on it and adapted the to fit it. He put braided brake lines on it; a seat that had more Basically he read an article on the and changed everything the person who the review didn’t like about it.

He also put mirrors on from a NX, which have rubber to help cut down on vibration. He put a exhaust on it which has long fallen apart. I put it to the stock pipe had a buddy who gave me one for free. I up the engine with basic black paint.

I changed the speedo but it still has the original clutch and throttle cables. Original original water pump…those are the rubber foot pegs When it gets wet they’re nasty. I should have them out to dirt pegs but the kind nice to have riding on the highway. ( Editor’s Jerry also retro a bicycle touring bag for storage – been on his bike for 20 years !)

What’s your favorite Sport ride?

Well, I this bike up to Inuvik in the Circle in 1996 — 5750 in 10 days. That was pretty My buddy Don that rode to and back with me decided our to Big Bend was stupid — over miles to ride 60 miles of He was the one that found this up to Inuvik; 450 miles of dirt to get in there.

The last day going Inuvik we rode 21 hours With 3 hours of sleep we rode back to Dawson When we got there we decided to hit the that night after a nap — I woke up 14 hours

We’d ride till one or the morning because it was light all the and get up early and go again. I’ll you what – you can’t really do the crazy rides unless got someone just as crazy as you are who to do it too. And that’s the way Don was. ( Don !)
